John the Baptist had the spirit of Elijah although he did not know it.
John the Baptist (Baptizer) did indeed have the spirit of Elijah and the ministry of Elijah (which will be manifested before the Day of Lord -- to bring Israel to repentance). Whether or not he knew it is something that is not disclosed, but we can be sure that John was very familiar with the OT and may have surmised that he was pre-figuring Elijah.John the Baptist had the spirit of Elijah although he did not know it.

But to claim that he was in fact Elijah and that is the end of the matter is contrary to Scripture. Christ called him "Elijah" metaphorically, but the real Elijah met Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration and talked with Him, and will appear on earth again during the reign of the Antichrist, along with Moses (as shown in Revelation 11).
