I've been told that the high priest had his leg tied with a rope before he entered the Holy of Holies; in the event of his death or incapacitation, he could be pulled out. Does anyone know if there is validity to this claim?

I've heard of that before, but personally I haven't read it in scripture. But I've been told that before the priests went into the Holy of Holies to pray for the sins of Israel they remained awake the entire night before, because they were afraid to sin in their dreams. And the rope was used in hopes that if they had unconfessed sin, they could be pulled out before the presence of God killed them.

I have heard that too. The reason the high priest tied a rope around himself is because nobody except the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies. I was told that if he had unconfessed sin and died, someone could pull him out. The high priest had to confess his sins before entering that part of the temple.

I've heard it. My Pastor even used it as an illustration. But from what I've read, there's no evidence of it in any of the Hebrew or Jewish writings. It seems to have come into legend sometime in the Middle Ages.

Hmm.. maybe we should have a Church Legends site (like Snopes has for Urban Legends)?

I have a reference book on Manners and Customs. I'll see if it has anything on this.

That's what I've heard. And when you think about it, if he had unconfessed sin and died, how in the world were they going to get him out of there without a rope? But that's just my reasoning. I don't know if it was true or not.

I have wondered about that myself. The rope would have been the only way considering the technology back then.

I too have heard or read in the past about the rope. Was scanning some of my literature today but at this point have been unable to document this.

Seems reasonable under the circumstances, and perhaps there are evidences somewhere that will indicate either way for a more sure answer.

Sine there appears to be no evidence for it I would wish all pastors would stop spreading this myth. It discredits what they say. I have heard atleast one if not more pastors in my life time talk about being tied with a rope.

How else could you get a priest out without a rope?

Have a new high priest carry him out? *shrugs*
I could see that, but how long did it take to get a new high priest? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just wondering.
