• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Is it the unpardonable sin to do work on Whitsunday or Pentecost?

Here in the Netherlands we have Pentecost on Sunday the 5th of June, and the second day on Monday the 6th of June, we have the second day so more people are able to go to Church. I am a student who is graduation in a few weeks and I’m very busy and usually work in weekends but I am worried about working today. I can go to a Church but I moved to where I live currently a month ago so I haven’t been to a Church here yet and I don’t know where exactly to find one. I am also thinking to spend my day on worship in my house but I’m not sure how to do that, perhaps I should read my bible or find an online church? And would it be bad for me to work tomorrow?

Until you deal with your OCD aggressively, everything will declare itself to be an "unpardonable" sin.
You will not escape that accusation no matter how much you argue with it.
  1. If you don't have one yet, see a psychiatrist.
  2. Find a church that regularly prays for healing.

There is only one sin unpardonable and it is not what you mentioned. As far as working on Sunday goes I personally honor the Sabbath on Sunday but it is not unpardonable to work then, if your job doesn't allow you to take that day off talk to Jesus about it, or request it off. Maybe tell Jesus that until you can get the day off you will honor Him on a different day. You see Jesus knows what you are going through and He is not waiting to accuse you, He is merciful and loving. Do not worry yourself with if a sin is unpardonable, 99.99% of all sin is pardonable, and the one sin Jesus mentions as being unpardonable people get caught up on if they did it and I do not think that's what Jesus's intention was when He mentioned it.

I would recommend taking one step at a time and making a goal to honor Jesus by not working on Sunday when you can, but until you can do that know Jesus is with you and will not accuse you, He knows you are trying to serve Him.

I also on a side note know that some Jewish converts and Seventh day Adventists honor God on Saturday and I believe God is ok with that too.

Remember what Jesus said, "The Sabbath was made for man not man for the sabbath" He does not want you to worry yourself. If you are not working on Sunday to honor God then great. The best thing is your relationship with Jesus so talk to Him about what you want to do, that is essentially what prayer is; talking to Jesus, and He will provide an open door for you to do just that.

Its not even a sin, because there is no such commandment. We are called to freedom, not to be subdued to some superstitions, symbolisms, traditions and other things.

It may be a cultural habit in your country or in your family, so if possible, keep it for the sake of peace and order in society, but it has nothing to do with morality or sin.

No, it's not the unpardonable sin. The unpardonable sin is attributing the work of the Holy Spirit to Satan (Matthew 12:31)

Thank you for your reply. My moving situation is a bit tricky because there is a lack of housing in my country, especially for students and young people, I have now moved for a 3rd time within 1,5 years and will need to move out of where i currently live in half a year again. So for me i'm quite desperate for housing and am in a "beggars can't be choosers"situation. I also didn't grow up going to churches and have only been once in my life. I'm not sure how to start going and don't know what denomination to pick. I'm also a bit anxious and awkward to go.
Also thank you for your advice

Hello, thank you for your reply.
I have been seeing a psychiatrist and therapist for about 1,5 years now to treat OCD, but i've only been treating my other OCD symptoms, but am having a hard time with religious OCD. Because in the case of OCD, the treatment my country provides is exposure therapy. Meaning you have to actively do the things you fear, which is a good solution for my other OCD symptoms. For example I had a fear of things falling on the ground and as treatment I had to slowly learn to pick them up step by step. But I don't know what to do with OCD involving intrusive religious thoughts, especially those involving the unpardonable sin. Because the last thing you want to do is to say those thoughts out loud, or speak about them. Do you know how to treat OCD without exposure therapy?

Along with whatever your psychiatrist is doing, seek out a church that prays for healing.
These are called Charismatic or Pentecostal churches over here.

There are definitely ways to treat religious OCD without going against your convictions! For example, you can do imaginal exposures (e.g., "What would it be like IF I committed the unpardonable sin?"). Here is an article about it:
ERP & Imaginal Exposures
The other articles on Jackie's page may be helpful, too; she includes her ERP script if you need an example (it is graphic, though, and may be triggering; she actually goes farther in her script than I probably would be comfortable with. Again, follow your own convictions!).
OCD
And an article about specific guidelines for writing an imaginal script: https://ocdla.com/imaginal-exposure-ocd-anxiety-4847

In my opinion, you should never have to go against your REAL convictions in order to work on your OCD (you may have to go against your OCD's demands, but not your real conscience!). You can be creative when writing a script, in order to address the obsession and purposely trigger your OCD but not do anything that goes against your conscience. I can talk more about that if needed!

Here's another good article about treating obsessions:
Managing the Haunting Thoughts of Pure O – OCD
The author of that blog also has a Facebook support group for people with OCD/anxiety, which I'm a part of and recommend: Christianity and Anxiety Disorders - Let's Talk | Facebook

Here are other good websites about religious OCD:
OCD and Scrupulosity – ACCFS
Scrupulosity.com: Faith-based Solutions for Religious OCD - Scrupulosity.com
OCD & CHRISTIANITY – CHRISTIANITY

As far as church is concerned, in my opinion the key is to find a place that fosters your growth in God, a place that teaches biblical truth and that encourages its members to love each other with a Christlike love. It's so beautiful to seek and desire God with all your heart, and find others who have the same desire! I pray that God will lead you to a church that helps you to flourish spiritually. Here's a great book about spiritual growth that I highly recommend: "Experiencing God" by Henry Blackaby.

Let me know if you need any more suggestions/resources; feel free to pm me if needed!
