Is it possible to not sin for a day?

I am new here but have been a Christian for many years. At a Bible Study a few nights ago I asked the question "is it possible to not sin for a day?" and was laughed at when I thought it was possible. I have asked many Christians this question for quite a while now and have yet to hear anyone agree that it is possible to be sinless for a day. I was told that you may sin in your dreams (although I'm not sure that's valid) and that I was vain for even thinking that it was possible to go a day without sinning. Doesn't Romans 6 talk about our freedom from sin and at the end of Romans 7 is speaks of the mind being where we are slaves to Gods law and in our sinful nature we are a slave to sin. So if we renew our minds and focus on the one who broke the chains aren't we free from the clutches of our sinful nature? Aren't we just allowing sin to be welcome in our lives by admitting we are powerless against it? The opposite of sin is obedience so why would that be difficult if we truly loved Jesus and understood the price he paid? Thanks for any replies. This is very disturbing..

Only when you apply the blood of Jesus. That's when you're enabled to love sincerely (1 Peter 1:22).

1 John 3:9 No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

The one who is led by the Holy Spirit is born again (Rom. 8:14). To be led means to follow willingly.

Matt. 19:21 Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."

To obey Jesus is to have His blood (1 Peter 1:2, 22).

Sanctification is a life long process, you must keep in mind that in our original state we are a fallen, depraved and evil people. Like you said we must reckon this nature dead, if we do this by faith and only if we do this can we be free from the power and pull of this old nature in us. Is it possible? Yeah, based on scripture I think so, although I know that personally I have never done it...

It is pretty hard when you're out and about on a busy day, having to interact with a lot of people, but I think it would be possible if you were absolutely focussed upon it. Sounds like an interesting challenge.

On a nice and relaxing day though, of course it would be possible. I'd have to keep away from the internet and TV, for even reading about bad news and disasters triggers my selfish nature. Even posting my opinion on a Christian message board has the ulterior motive of pride. ;)

But such a peaceful day would not benefit my sanctification. It is when I'm in the thick of it, frustrated at my inability to remain Christlike, that I'm closest to the Kingdom of Heaven.

Yes, and even not wanting to sin for a day just seethes with self righteousness.;)

Thank you all for the replies. This last one is very baffling to me. If desiring to sin for a day is sinful then why even attempt it. Aren't we supposed to do what we can to avoid sinning? I am not understanding your response. Thanks again everyone:)

I was trying to show the total depravity of man, which means that even if we attempt a good work it will ultimately be for sinful reasons.(as in if you do make it a day without sinning you will be proud that you did, which would be sin).

Yes we should do all we can to avoid sinning, God is perfect and we are called to be perfect as He is, the point is though in this life that is impossible (being perfect I mean). You may be able to make it one day without sinning but probably not two...

I think I understand what SoldierOfSoul is saying. We are actually made righteous not by our own efforts, but by grace through Jesus.

When we attempt to be good and not sin through our own effort, we're kind of putting grace to the side to see how far we can get on our own. It will inevitably fail.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't always strive to be good. Our effort, with grace, produce the change.

Its impossible folks, otherwise you wouldnt have to make daily confessions.
Sometimes God can ask you to share the word with someone, and you choose not to. That is sin.
I John 1:8-10
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

here we are!
If you do any of the following then you are sinning. They are a sign that there is a sinful nature in our souls, which we should crucify.

Galatians 5:19-21
19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.

For example: If you live in hatred, you are sinning daily and God does not attend to your prayers for he says that forgive as i have forgiven you.

Galatians 5:24
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

This is the standard, for you to be in Christ you must crucify such things daily, as the Spirit reveals them to you. We all know them, contentions, strife, etc.
We all know that such things manifest in us.

I would like to add 2 thoughts:

1) We sin and the judgements are made on the heart, not the action. I once debated with a gentleman, who couldn't see how you could be giving away money (to the needy) and still sinning - you can, because its all about the heart. I've had to counsel a believer that read his bible all day, that it was sin to do so!

I really like how brother SoldierOfSoul explained it here:
"I was trying to show the total depravity of man, which means that even if we attempt a good work it will ultimately be for sinful reasons.(as in if you do make it a day without sinning you will be proud that you did, which would be sin)."

2) If you focus on sin, or the law (trying to do good) then sin will increase (not decrease). Simply you sin more! Romans 5:20

Note: try telling yourself enough times that you won't swear or lie (you pick the sin) and you will be the biggest cursing lier on the planet for that 24 hour period.

The only answer is JESUS living HIS LOVE LIFE through you - then you have power!
(and if/when you fail, back to JESUS again and thank HIM for forgiving you 2000 yrs ago, and really before time began!)

Dear Only a man. For a day, yes. But for longer NO. God has made us in His image, and basically we are Good. Adam and Eve, our proto-types, have shown us. They were good, until temptation reared its ugly head. God is our Heavenly Father and God made us to live with Him for eternity. Being on Earth, where temptation surrounds us day and night, is the best school, ( for the use of a better word) to learn to become as loving as God wants us to be, selflessly and beneficially. The Bible tells us what happened to Mankind, we became ever more selfish and unloving In time Jesus came, He showed us what God really wants from us, loving sons and daughters, worthy to be with forever & ever. Jesus gave us 2 Commandmends, they contain all what God told us in His Ten Commandments: 1) Love God with all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all our minds. 2) Love our neighbour as ourselves. That is easy to remember, and not easy to do, BUT possible. WE have Jesus our Saviour to help and guide us, we have the Holy Spirit to empower us with His Love, and we have time enough to become better and better. We will stumble and fail often, but God will forgive us every time we ask sincerely and remember what Jesus taught us in His Prayer: " Father forgive us our trespasses as we will forgive those who trespass against us." We will get up and keep trying. God can see our efforts, and will approve and bless us. We are told to REPENT, to change our selfish and unloving characters into: loving God as He deserves to be loved, with all our beings, and to love our neighbour, ( all others, friends or not friends) as we love ourselves. That can be done, otherwise our loving God would not ask it of us. God is Love. I say this humbly and with love, Only a man. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

Yes, with the Spirit of God inside of you, which occurs at your new birth as a Christian, you CAN live, not just one day, but EVERY day without sin. The Bible says that he who commits sin is of the devil and he that is born of God cannot sin (1 John 3). If you actively pursue living a Christ-centered, Spirit-filled life, you cannot sin. Many are deceived into believing that you can't help it, but if we didn't have victory over sin, why did Jesus die? We can't go to Heaven with sin in our lives, so if He paid the price, and yet we still must be bound to sin, what purpose did it serve? Grace doesn't mean we are covered no matter what we DO, but that what we DID is gone. "Shall we live in sin that grace may abound? God forbid!" (Romans 6) No one except Christ ever lived on this earth that has never sinned, but you don't have to sin anymore once you are saved. It doesn't mean that it won't ever happen, don't get me wrong, people will make mistakes, BUT you don't HAVE to and it is possible if you keep your mind and focus on God. When we sin, it is because we are drawn away of our own lust and enticed and we decide not to do what God says, we do what WE want. If we are actively and constantly pursuing God's ways and doing it His way, how can you sin? He can't sin and never would tell anyone to do so.

Thank you all so much. This has been very advantageous to my walk with Christ. If we renew our minds we should be able to get control of the influences around us and in us that cause us to sin. Isn't sin just desire that we let turn into sin because we are to lazy to be proactive instead of reactive? Also, how do we know Enoch (Genesis 5:24, Hebrews 11:5) wasn't a person that chose to focus on the God that created him rather than the world he had to live in? I realize he was born into sin because of the Fall of Adam and Eve but how do we know he didn't make a choice to live the remainder of his life sin free (and bridled his thoughts to achieve it) and because of that God gave him the ultimate honor...to walk with the Almighty One and never die? Keep your eyes on the prize and thanks to all.

For you to go without sinning, it does not happen all of the sudden; it will be years of training and learning to walk with Him. Paul said that he has not achieved yet, but he was going towards it.
The more you walk with God, the more you will go without sinning. God's plan is for us to be without sin.
