The pharisees come to mind......and can that be REVERSED !! (pure but not righteous, spirit willing, flesh weak syndrome).

A pure heart is required to be born again.

A pure heart is one that God sees to be free from any reservations, one that says to God, "I am at the end of my rope, I can't do anything right on my own, I surrender everything to you".

This "pure heart" does not have to identify God as Savior, Lord, King, or any other theological designation, this pure heart must just come as a little child.

I think the Pharisees thought they were righteous, but were not, as they were not right with God. I believe one needs to have a righteous heart in order to have a pure heart. When we come to Jesus He gives us a new heart! We are right with God and our heart is pure! Of course we need to keep our heart pure! 2 Timothy 2:22

Define what you mean by a "righteous heart".

I'm sure you are not talking about the heart as in blood pump.

How do you define the "heart" in this question?

Righteous heart - someone who ticks all the religious boxes. Goes to church, prays, gives tithes, clocks in and out, wouldn't hurt a cat, plays by the rulebook, OUTWARDLY SUPREME !

Purity is also measured in terms of singleness.

A pure heart would love the Lord first, and have no other
loves on the throne. A pure heart would not be double-minded,
would withhold nothing from God, and put Jesus Christ first in all things.

A pure heart is 100% in love with Jesus, and not on the fence about
anything pertaining to Him, or to the life and godliness which He imparts us.

Someone with good intentions, no malice, a trier, no hidden agenda or bad motives, but OFTEN falls flat on their face............:)
LOL, let me get this straight. Based on your definitions, you are asking us if it is possible that someone can be outwardly religious, go to church, tithe, do all the right things in thew world's eyes, and yet not have good motives?

Is this a trick question? Here in the United States at least, in the last Gallup poll, 80% of the population claimed to be Christians. Wow! I have been praying for revival all this time and it already hit! :D

Now, if we look at what the words really mean, my understanding is that righteous means to be in rightstanding. I believe that means all those who have bowed the knee in sincerity to God to forgive them and become their saviour. They are righteous. But are they pure?

I think Ajax said it best on the purity part. If silver is 99.9% pure, is it pure? No, it is impure, for there is .01% impurities in it, right?

Ajax was correct, for if we are double-minded, it stands to reason we are not single minded, and thus we are NOT loving the Lord with all our hearts, minds, souls and strength, amen?

So where does that leave us? Shall we try to be more single minded? How does one so that?? Especially with the fact we believe that no matter how hard we try, no matter how long we labor, in the end we will still not be pure, right? We will always have a little bit of our flesh left.

There is but one way to truly be pure, and that is to get rid of our flesh, the fly in our ointment. We cannot try to "die more", we must be dead and God has given us a way and the weakest among us can do it. As a matter of fact, the failures among us seem to get it first!

We are asked to reckon we are dead NOW, to. by faith alone, add the new nature God has for us to our spiritual inventory, to agree with God that we no longer live, but Christ lives in us and that the life we now live, we live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved us and gave Himself for us.

We do not frustrate the grace of God by somehow "trying to die more to self", for if righteousness comes from our self efforts to "be good", there will always be a part of us, our fleshly nature, that will still be in rebellion to God. Frankly, our worst danger is that outwardly we may seem to succeed, as the pharisees did, and in doing so, be found robbing God of the glory of our "transformation". The pharisees ended up like the 'whited sepelchres', religious imitations of what life looks like, full of artificail fruits, pretty on the outside, inside just gussied up flesh. If we choose to follow this path, that will be our fate as well.

Nothing profits but a new creature.

Blessings and I hope your Olympic witnessing is going wonderfully.

Gideon
