Is it okay for me to be interested in Om chanting?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

I'm not into it for any spiritual reason, quite frankly I just like the way Buddhist chanting sounds (I'm contemplating a music major). Is this wrong of me?

No. Go for it.

I'm not saying you will but, if for some reason you get alittle more caught up in the whole Buddhist thing than think you will, know that you will always be welcomed home.

Why would a Christian adopt the religious practices of a false religion? That did not work out so well for the Jews of the OT.

Use "Jesus" or "Lord" instead of "OM"--it works quite well!

or meditate on scripture... Scripture produces the best lyrics for music majors... imho. Im not sure I understand why a serious christian would be interested in another religion's meditation practices. TBH, I dont see the harm in a little word like 'Ommmm'. ykwim? For example, I do like yoga. I like the physical strengthening and toning it does for my body. I dont possess anything that is spiritual and having to do with yoga, its purely physical exercise. Im very careful with what I let into my home like that. So, with that said, just be careful, like another poster said, about getting into any other spiritual habits that have nothing to do with Christ.

When the prodigal son wanted to leave his Fathers house what did the father do? Did He tell him he can not leave and that the son must stay? Or did the Father give the son his inheritance and let him go?

Why do we as "christians" look to speak and act where our Father has given us examples not to? We should let those who wish to go, leave and simply welcome them if they should decide to return.

What is more dangerous, allowing one young in the faith to go and seek his own path, or make them stay so they can fester in a luke warm faith? If that child returns He will be fortified as a servant of the Lord, if he stays then it is guaranteed that one having a luke warm faith will be spewed from the mouth of the Lord.

Do any of you think that faith in our religion will save us from the promises of God?

@drich: are you speaking about me specifically? I don't WANT to be a prodigal son and do something that is going to:
a) do me spiritual damage without me realizing it, and/or
b) be a bad witness to either the unsaved, or my brothers and sisters in n Christ.

That's why I ASKED, to make sure I wasn't doing myself spiritual harm even THINKING about another religion's practices.

There is a purpose to all things spiritual. Even if your intentions are not of a spiritual nature, what you want to be apart of is of a deep spiritual nature. Do not allow yourself to be blindly seduced by shinny objects, or pleasing melodies, without first understanding what they are. (It is better to goto source material rather than hearing it second hand.)

I assumed that you knew as a music major what you were getting into, that is why I said what i said.

Stay away from it. Say the Jesus Prayer instead: Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.

avoid that chanting like it was a toxic plague brother. Do not risk grieving the Holy Spirit. One cannot partake of the cup of the demons and the cup of the Lord too, you cannot have a part in the Lord's table and the table of demons. 1 Corinthians CH. 10 verse 21.

If you are a Christian God has called you to live a "HOLY" life with your life being a "LIVING SACRIFICE" to our God.

read Romans CH. 12 versese 1-3 which state:

"Therfore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as "living sacrifices", HOLY AND PLEASING TO GOD --whish is your SPIRITUAL WORSHIP. DO NOT CONFORM ANY LONGER TO THIS PATTERN OF THE WORLD, but be TRANSFORMED by the RENEWING OF YOUR MIND. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is -- his good, pleasing and perfect will.

You will do well to take heed of God's counsel given in these scriptures concerning chanting. That stuff is markedly "antichristian" and there is no good reason for you to conform to the pattern of this world is there? Is that practice of chanting drinking from the cup of the demons? Go ask the Lord yourself (the Holy Spirit) in prayer to reveal the truth of what I just presented to you. Read the scriptures yourself, and then pray and ask God for his guidance and wisdom, and for HIM to tell you whether the practice of chanting would be something you should be engaging in. Ask God if this would be offensive to him in light of the first and second commandments.

God bring you his wisdom and guidance through the power of his Holy Spirit within you my brother.

We as Christians are admonished in many places in scripture to literally hate and shun what is evil. Get a concordance and see for yourself.

I will make the comparison of the risk of surgery:

your consciousness (soul?) is out of the picture, leaving your body "empty." For a non-believer this has less Spiritual risk; Satan has you in his kingdom and is probably happy enough to leave you low on his priority list of stealing, killing, and destroying.

For us who believe, I strongly admonish anyone who will knowingly be "leaving their guard" to gather support in the form of prayer warriors creating a hedge of protection until you "return."

If I'm not mistaken, the Om chant's purpose is to create a state similar to being put under for surgery; "nothingness." This has NO place in Christianity!

Also let me point out I'm a musician too, and use the Zen approach to good effect. There is good stuff re" quieting the mind." I would say Jesus was absolutely a Zen Master, and a "good" Buddhist as well. Meaning, He got those points and applied them, perfectly. W/o falling into the traps, and of course, w/o sin. I sure would love to hear Him play MY instrument - now THAT would be a lesson!!!

om chanting is just a form of mediation using respiratory reverberations to help calm your mind (like the sound of a fan when you are trying to go to sleep...helps clear your mind doesn't it?). It is a psychological and physical means to calming your mind.

It is NOT directly tied to any religion or cult. I say do it the 7 times and then focus on what God is telling you and enter into a state of prayer. This will calm your spirit God Bless.
