Is it healthy to live as a recluse?

I mean, being separated from society, family and friends I think is the right path for me to choose. This isn't to say I won't take the consequences into consideration. I think being separate from society is freedom from all the crime, debauchery, selfishness, stress, sadness, cruelty and horrible decisions people continue to make. I'm not saying I'm a saint (FAR from it actually), but being separate from all of this vociferous activity is peaceful to me.

It's not biblical. Jesus became involved in our world and there was no way a NT Christian could live apart form very close daily contact with society.Monasticism is an extension of that line of thinking.

My instinctive response is to say it is unhealthy if it is a permanent situation.

To temporarily and voluntarily retreat from other human people and from society can be healthy and positive, giving one time to think and to focus on developing a deeper relationship with Creator.
But I think living alone is a rather individualistic situation - some people do good on their own, others do not.

In my case, I wound up living as a hermit due to unforseen peculiar circumstances, not by my own choice.
I am also unsuccessful in staying disconnected from society`s ills and from the cruelty and hate of some fellow human beings.
There are lotsa folks who cannot bring themselves to leave others in peace.

The hardest part for me is that, although I have grown much in Creator`s presence [he is the ONLY ONE who will never dump me], I do miss family and friends, being one of those critters who needs the company of others with "skin on".

As a Christian we have a life in us that wants to be with other Christians. The Christian life is a meeting life. If I had to illustrate I would say that we are more like bees living in a hive than a butterfly living alone.
