Is it a sin to use a crack in order to use my software?

Hello I'm a 19 year old artist and I have bought many art softwares from ebay last year one of which was photoshop cs3, I did in fact buy it legally for 85 ish dollars and it installed but the program needs to activate, after buying it I learned that it can't be activated as of 2017. What I did which is what makes me think I sinned as, I downloaded a crack file and put it inside my photoshop cs3 files and overwrote them and now it works without activation but I am worried that this is a sin because it isn't supposed to activate as of 2017. I'm worried that I'm stealing and that I'll go to hell for this please help me out.

Edit: For clarification i have the original serial number, box and everything and my verison of cs3 is real and legit not fake at all and I got it by legal means and so did the seller the software isn't pirated or cracked. I just can't activate it unless I override the program which makes me feel kind of strange. I got it from ebay for $90 dollars and have the box and everything but Cs3 and Cs2 activation servers were taken down in 2017 so i mean idk if its wrong for me to still use the software I bought legally and just override the activation because the servers are down

Edit #2: Hello everyone I ended up unistalling and permanatley erasing the software for my computer so I won't be able to ever use it again as the files are permanatley destroyed. Thanks for all the advice I feel this is the right thing to do, as of right now I'm going to be using gimp and an old copy of photoshop elements I have until I can get some better software that can be activated.

I don't believe it is stealing because you legitimately purchased it. It is the company who decided that what you had purchased no longer can be activated from 2017 onwards. It is your right to use the software as long as your Windows supported its execution.

To me all these software companies that use the timed locked out are unscrupulous. They have the right to not support the software but not the right to deny the right to use after purchase.

well the seller made it seem like it could be activated I wouldn't have bought it if I knew that. My dad tried to get a refund but we werent able to. Also my dad looked up why I couldn't activate it and it was because the activation servers were taken down by adobe in 2017. I own a legal version what hurts is if i bought it in 2017 I could have activated it normally but now it's differferent I feel weird now not knowing if im sinning or not.

Yes, it's a sin. But the good news is that Christ forgives you as you confess your sins to Him. And in your freedom in Christ, in this matter, I can recommend either:

(1) Adobe CC Photography (includes Photoshop), which is something like $10 a month.
(2) Affinity, which is comparable to Photoshop at a reasonable one-off payment of something like $50.
(3) Kira, which is free and OK for painting.
(5) Gimp, which is free. It's a bit old school, but it gets the job done.

Well, I suppose you can try to contact Adobe for advice. They may be able to help out if you have the original serial code and key. Otherwise, Gimp isn't too bad.

Were you unaware that "crack" software is, by definition, stolen intellectual property being sold illegally? It's like buying a stolen watch from a guy on the street.

Beyond participating in the sin of the thief, the secular reason to avoid crack software is that you're dealing with someone who is at once very clever and immoral...so you don't know what possible malware has been included in that package. And, yes, the eBay seller ripped you off, just as he ripped off Adobe...because he's a thief.

...Okay I am not explaining this right or something the product itself is not a crack. It is normal and legal. I used a crack file to stop the activation so I can use it in 2022. The software itself was legal and not pirated in anyway I downloaded an external file so it doesnt need to activate it. The guy sold me a regular version of the software that he used a long time ago. What I'm trying to explain is the guy bought the software when it was new normally and sold it to me on ebay. But it can't be used in 2022 unless you can activate it which you can't anymore unless you modify files. Thats all. So I didn't crack anything I modified some files of legal software that I bought legally in order to use it today because its old and adobe took down activation servers.

What is theft here is done by the company. While it is not the case for the OP, let's say you purchased it prior to 2017 from Abode and activated it. Imagine you reformatted your PC/laptop come 2018 and tried to reinstall the program again only to find out the company no longer maintains the activation server. Worst is the company didn't provide alternative to activate the program. Meaning you just purchased a useless product.

Imagine if this happens to a car manufacturer. After 2017 they no longer produce the specific car key to the model. You so happen to lose your key and the spare, you are by all entitlement able to ask a third party key maker to produce a key that works as long as the car belongs to you. Same as a software crack.

Not everything is piracy. When the company no longer supports you, you're entitled to get a third party to help you use that software since it is yours to begin with. All the new software that only gives you license to use the program is unscrupulous. They make it so that you're forced to upgrade whenever they come out with newer versions. Worst still is the new business model that forces timed subscription only.

Stinks of you will own nothing and you will like it attitude. Consumers are nothing but produce to be harvested at given interval. And this is coming from an IT pre-sales consultant.

It doesn't matter that you bought a version of the software legally, because it's the product key that's really at the root of it.

It's no different to you buying a Kindle book and then publishing it online for others.

Return it to eBay saying that the product code had been used and therefore the product is falsely advertised.

Nope. If you have registered your copy, they can still handle that situation through customer service. But having bought it through an unauthorized seller, it can't be registered.

Typically ebay has a good return policy and given that it can be proven that this particular software cannot be activated then they should provide you with a refund. You should call them.

I’m guessing that your dad informed ebay that the software can’t be activated as of 2017 right? So if you purchased it after 2017 then ebay should be obligated to refund the product. If they’re not willing then I would file a complaint about them scamming people by selling software that can’t be activated. You should definitely pursue the matter further and push eBay. Probably need to request to talk to a supervisor and you need to provide them proof that the software cannot be activated after 2017.
