Is it a sin to play the video games?

I've literally never met a Christian who said that, so by most Christians, I'm guessing you mean foaming at the mouth ultraconservative fringe crazy.

Yes, the ones who dub themselves "True Christians" (implying everyone else is false and going to hell, I assume). The ones who decry hand holding, Pokemon and anything secular. I know people like this, so they're not just an internet meme anymore.

Then stop hanging out with the super conservative fringe christian crowds and join a mainstream denomination with normal, sane people.

But they don't take the bible seriously and treat their religion like it's a social club. And there's nobody under 70 in any of the mainline churches in my area. I don't enjoy hanging out with people who are that old.

Its not a sin to play video games, but its not 100% healthy for your christianity. Even the bible says this of most things we do in modern times. I have mostly given up on gaming, especially some of the stuff I was into. As I speak I am playing Counter Strike Global Offensive (Offense?!?).

The only time it becomes sinful and dangerous to your religion is when you begin feeling no regard for what you do in real life and care only for the games. Basically, don't let them take over your life and they can even be healthy in stressful situations.

Indulging or idolizing video games can be sinful. Also, I would say it's sinful to get pleasure out of what displeases God (bloodshed, etc.). I'd never dream of playing Grand Theft Auto or Mortal Kombat.

I stick to innocent games like the Mario series when I have some free time. And I don't overindulge in them, so I think I'm fine.

But playing video games in and of itself is not sinful. If it were, then couldn't we just say all games are sinful? No more chess or tic-tac-toe? The idea is silly.

Is it a sin to play soccer?
Is it a sin to watch television?
Is it a sin to read?
..........

Anything can be sinful, anything can be used by Satan to deceive us into rejecting Christ. The activity in question isn't really relevant at this point, what matters is what is it to you. I found that sometimes I put my hobbies, be it anime or simply studying, in front of God. I would pray to Him less, think of Him less, start idolizing my activities instead by devoting myself to them....now that's sinful! That's basically rejecting the Holy Spirit...

Video games are not sinful as long as they do not replace God, in the sense that your relationship with Him does not change. Remember that the object itself is not sinful, it is you who is committing the sin with the object. Now as for the ethics and morals of violent video games...that's another story, but the fact of the matter remains, worship the Lord your God only.

Anyway back to Black Ops 2...

As with TV programs, books, music, and other things of this nature, this is a matter in which convictions vary from Christian to Christian. Some people don't believe in video games at all, and among those who do, the line is drawn in so many places that it can get confusing. Personally, I see nothing wrong with playing video games to relax, depending on the game and what perspective it's placed in. I do agree that there could be a problem if it is done too much, and watch that it doesn't lead to an addiction. I would liken playing a video game to eating a comfort food. For instance, ice cream: eating a small bowl once in a while won't hurt a person; it's too much ice cream that would be considered unhealthy. In short, there is nothing wrong with a little bit of entertainment of some form or another, as long as it is in its right place.

I'd say it really depends. Self centered games where 90% of your attention is on what your character looks like what items you can acquire ( material possessions) what spells you have acquired ( sorcery ) then mindless mass killing ( most hack and slash rpgs )
or shooting games where the main objective is to see how many kills you can get, I mean come on.
Also its bad when you start cussing at people, getting angry, and rage quitting, these things are all telling you that the game is bad. Plus how many games promote scantily clad female characters?

When it starts consuming your life, that is when it is bad, when there are scheduled events in the game controlling your life, or when it takes 3 hours to do a ''quest'' or when you start putting it before God/life, that is when it is bad.

Games that increase your intelligence, and don't promote destructive behavior are ok.

When you stop to think about it, Pacman is one warped game. What is Pacman but this eerie creature consisting of nothing but a head with a big mouth that moves, gobbling down special pellets so he can eat ghosts? After Pacman eats them, you see nothing but their eyes floating around for about five seconds until they return to normal. CREE-PEE! ^_^

Seriously, though, Pacman (and the like) are some of the games I prefer.

::prepares to have stones thrown at him::

The reasons people find games like tetris boring is for two reasons:
1. Its a thinking game. We've gotten so used to games being quick and action based that we find slow games to be painful, especially ones that require major thinking. Example I can't imagine kids today playing Myst. BTW I am not saying people are stupid or anything, just saying we like fast paced games now.

2. Increased everything. This is sort of along the same lines really but as games have progressed so has the violence, language, sex...etc. So we become numb to what we currently see and always want more and better. I say this from experience.

When I used to play Wolfenstein 3D I thought it was amazing. Then games like Doom and Duke 3D came out and I was impressed and found wolfenstein boring. When more games came out like SiN I then found Duke 3d boring. So on and so on. Its not anyones fault per say, but it's natural that we always want more and better. Its sort of like an addiction.

This applies to most anything like movies, sex...etc. I realize not everyone is like this. But the vast majority are like this. Psychology has shown that. Getting away from this stuff more I notice the psychological pattern I had like most have. Now that I am out of it I feel relived. I control games, they don't control me now.

And no this is not a post saying "Avoid gaming heathens!". lol. Just stating we need to monitor ourselves so the devil doesn't get us sucked up into gaming like crazy.
