  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Are Phobias bad? If I were Claustrophobic (fear of tight spaces), or Acrophobic (fear of heights), or any of the other types of phobias, would you call me evil? If homophobia is truly about fear, how can you fault somebody for having a fear?

When I was three my sister bit the head off of her Ken doll and whenever I hear that somebody is using the name Ken I imagine blood squirting around the room from their neck and I pee my pants. Is that a healthy fear or should I seek counseling?

The problem comes when that (unreasonable) fear triggers discriminatory and/or violent behaviour.

So if a person is homophobic, but they do not mistreat anybody, there is nothing wrong with their homophobia; is this your position?

I don't have a position on homophobia because I think it reduces to hate. If you're afraid of gay people, then the cure is to get to know some. They're people just like you.

So as long as homophobia does not result in bad behavior, there is nothing wrong with it?
That depends on your personal morality.

Many think that having hate in your heart is bad thing, some think that jealousy is inherently bad.

Not totally reliable. The stories of children abused or cast out by their own parents for coming out as gay paint a tragic picture.

Good point, but this thread is a faux problem presented for the sake of promoting the very circumstances that enabled that abuse.

I don't buy your sincerity so my input will not be helpful. Sorry.

A phobia is an irrational fear of something that's not likely to cause harm.
When this involves irrational fear of people being out to get you, then it is harmful to both persons and again therapy is recommended. I would only fault people who refuse counseling for their anxiety disorder.

Yeah, I wouldn't call people being against homosexuality a "phobia" Attaching the term "phobia" to a word, is just a way of politicizing it. Just because you are against something, doesn't mean you are afraid of it.

How about if the phobia has nothing to do with believing someone is out to get them?

It's more subtle than that.

The problem is that fear generates anxiety and anxiety will colour your attitude to something. Often you are unaware that your actions are generating problems. You'd be surprised at how much of what you do is based on unconscious, unconsidered decision making.

The other reality is that homophobes really do hurt people by effectively signalling their intent to exclude the other.
