I have been struggleing a lot about Christianity. A friend has been speaking to me about it, but from what I see, of other Christians, not her, I don't think I can be one. I don't want to go to Hell, who does right? I also love god, as I understood God, as the creator. I never before put a lot of thought into it, what God is. Part of me just thinks Christianity is right, but I can't explain why. I thought though to be a Christian there were things you had to do, and other things you absolutely must not do. That being the case I just felt I could not.

I hope I made some sense there. :sorry:

Hi There SterlingSilverRose!

Welcome to the forums. I might be wrong, but you seem to be viewing Christianity as a list of dos and don'ts. Thankfully, it isn't! It is really about experiencing God & building a relationship with Him. The more I travel this journey, the more satisfying I find this gift of true Christianity.

God is a like a loving father or mother - they only want what is best for their child. And like any child, we can easily drift "off the tracks" if we don't get some guidance from our loving parent. Likewise, God gives us principles in the bible for us to live by. They are not rules for rules sake, they are guideposts to help us to grow into the men & women he wants us to be. The bible tells us that:
"Everything is permissible [allowable] for me—but not everything is beneficial."
It is often easier to cheat & lie our ways through life, but it is not beneficial to us in the long term. I have found that following God's principles lead to a far greater happiness in life, and a truly fulfilling relationship with our creator.

There are, actually, things you must do to be a Christian. Salvation isn't just "fire insurance"; its not a "get-out-of-Hell-for-free" card. The Bible is filled with dos and don'ts. One's motive for observing the Bible's rather exhaustive list of rules, however, makes all the difference to whether or not doing so is a joy or a burden. God intends that our obedience to His commands comes out of a love for Him. He doesn't really accept any other motive for doing as He directs us to do. When, and if, God enlightens you to the "length, and depth, and breadth and height" of His love for you, when His "love is shed abroad in your heart," you will be "filled with all the fulness of God" and will then easily, and happily deny all the world for Him.

Peace to you.

Close, but not exactly.

In Mark 1:15, Jesus tells us to, "repent and believe the gospel." Belief without repentance is meaningless. Even the demons believe in God and they tremble in terror because of it (James 2:19). The demons believe, but will not repent, so they are eternally lost and destined for hell. God commands all people everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30).

What does it mean to repent?

To have shame for your sins and long for God's forgiveness. To turn from your sins and turn to God.

Part of me just thinks Christianity is right, but I can't explain why.

That is the Holy Spirit of God speaking to your heart.

I thought though to be a Christian there were things you had to do, and other things you absolutely must not do. That being the case I just felt I could not.

That is one of the beauties of Christianity, you don't have to do all of these things and make all of these changes on your own. God will work within you to make these things happen. Even with repentance, you've got to admit you've sinned (broken God's Law) and be willing to change, but God takes it from there and helps make the rest happen. Even after being a Christian for along time, there are times when I do not want to do what God wants me to do. At those times, I will tell God that I do not want to do what He wants me to do and I will tell Him that even though I am unwilling to do what He wants me to do, that I am willing for Him to make me willing, that is for Him to change my heart on this matter, and, usually, within a matter of days or weeks, I find that my mind, regarding the matter, has changed in favor of God's plan.

So, in conclusion, the idea that you will be left alone to do Christianity, is wrong. Once you take the initial steps, God will be there to help you every step of the way.

Ok let me help you out.

You SHOULD read the Bible.

You SHOULD let the Teachings of Christ Guide you.

You SHOULD try to learn life lessons from the Bible and apply them to your everyday Life.

You SHOULD NOT base your faith, or what have you, on other People.

You SHOULD NOT Let other people tell you what you "must" and "must not" do as a Christian.

The Only MUST is what Jesus said... Not anyone else.

Hope this Helps.

God Bless

Hi Sterling!

I would read the book of John in a version of the Bible that is easy fro you to read and understand. I prefer the New International, but I also like other versions. You can check out different versions online at Bible Gateway.

Some might think Christianity is a list of do's and don'ts. Unfortunately, even some believers focus more on what others do that is wrong and not enough on just loving them! The thing about it is, is that the things God doesn't want us to do are the things that are not good for us. They might feel good and sem like a good time, but in the end they cause pain. And when you believe and accept God's offer of forgiveness, His spirit helps you steer clear of the stuff you shouldn't do.

And yes, accepting Christ's death for forgiveness of sin will get you out of hell. But the best part is the daily relationship with God. There is no word I can think of to describe the peace, joy, and feeling of completion that knowing God provides.

So basically I need to pray and read. I have read some, but where to start and all, it's a little over whelming.

With all due respect to others who have posted, praying and reading the bible will not, in and of itself, provide the information for which you search.

You need to find a full gospel church that teaches the true salvation message. Attend their Sunday school sessions, bible study groups, etc. That is the fastest way to learn the basics.

The fact that you are wondering about it shows that the Holy Spirit is working in your heart to bring you to God. The bible tells us that this is to happen. God wants all to be saved, but He gave us free will to make our own decisions.

Salvation means to truly regret your sins (and we all have them every day), ask Christ to forgive those sins, ask Him to come into your heart, that you believe that He came to pay the price for your salvation.

That He died on the cross to pay that price, that he was resurrected on the third day, and some 40 days later ascended to heaven in full sight of a number of people. Today, He sits at the right hand of god, acting as our mediator between us and God.

After we "believe" we are expected to try to follow Christ's directions and to carry the message of salvation to others.

That, essentially, is what it is about. As I recall, there are some 618 "laws" given in the Old Testament by God. Note, however, that many of those laws had to do with diet, certain foods, how they were prepared, etc.

The New Testament essentially removed all those dietary rules and prohibitions.

We should try to follow all the 10 commandments, plus the one that Christ added. Namely to love one another as He loved mankind.

Find your church, try it out. If you don't feel comfortable there, find another until you find one in which you feel comfortable and is teaching you what you feel you need to know.

You know what happens to most new Christians? Among other things, they start doing rather than being. This isn't bad if the things they are doing help them to be, but this isn't usually what happens. Instead, doing replaces being. There's lots of Bible study, many prayer meetings, dramatic changes in lifestyle and personal conduct, heavy involvement in church life and so on. Now, none of these things are bad in and of themselves, but they can become the point of being a Christian, which they most definitely are not.

What is a Christian? A Christian is one who has entered into a personal, love-relationship with Jesus Christ. To put it simply, Christ is the point of being a Christian. No amount of religious activity can make up for knowing, and loving, and walking with him. Often the intention is that Bible study, and prayer, and church ministry are to be the means of building a relationship with Christ -- and they can do this -- but they can, strangely, also replace relating with him. Study your Bible so that you may know Christ. Pray without ceasing so that you may know Christ. Serve in your local church so that you may know Christ. In the end, it's all about him.

Peace to you.

I believe that starting at the New testament, the Gospel of Matthew, to be a great place to start.

That is from what I can tell, I am looking at. I'm not a party girl that doesn't want to give up some fun. I'm afraid, even here, I didn't think I would be but I am. There is no way I'd walk into a church, alone, maybe no one would know and things wold be ok. If I asked though, even here I'm afraid of being yelled at. In person I'd be afraid of being hurt. I want to just be open and not the super drama queen, but yeha I'm afraid. I want to just go here's the deal this is my life, and I don't want to trn it upset dwn, hurt people, loose people, just to find out there was no need to, or that I'm wrong.

The truth is that if you accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord, if you completely put your trust in him to love you and rule your life, you will never be the same. When the creature embraces the Creator on a heart-level the Bible tells us that the Spirit of the Creator, the Holy Spirit of God, comes to that person to dwell within him or her. You cannot have this happen to you and expect nothing to change. When God makes you His dwelling place you become a "new creation," the person you used to be "passes away" and in its place a "new you" comes into being. (2 Cor. 5:17)

The effect of God upon a life is to make it more like Him. He is holy and those who are His children He intends to make likewise holy. This means, inevitably, that many things that came into a person's life before they accepted Christ, things that were not holy, not honoring to God, are removed. There is no stone God leaves unturned in this regard. He will clean every closet you and I have -- thoroughly. But the cleaning, if we do not hinder it, will bring us into an existence that is worth all that has been removed. In God's presence is "fullness of joy" and we receive from Christ a life that is "more abundant". And when you truly taste of this life you will want nothing else.

Peace to you.

Hi Aiki,

I guess that makes sense. I guess I'm just not ready for that kind of change, it would not effect my life alone, and although I think I love god, I've always thought so, I love the people in my life to and don't want to hurt people. Thanks for the responce.

What if you were meant by God to be the first of your circle of friends and relatives to be saved? That they would be saved by seeking what they saw in you? Would they not be more hurt by never hearing how much God loved them and what he did for them? Please don't be afraid!

As for fearing to go into a church - that's what the back rows are for. Every church I ever entered as a newbie, I sat in the back. Some sought me out there, others let me be until I was comfortable enough to move up to the middle and join some Bible study groups. :D

I was fortunate in that I was the last of my family to be saved and it took forever for me to see the light. Several of my old friends are not saved YET and they continue to associate with me because they love me. I witness where I can and pray lots. Maybe someone is praying for you right now!

Ah, Rose, you have a lot of legitimate concerns here. It is hard to contemplate leaving the "old life" and trying something new, espeically if you're one of the first in your group. And as someone else already said, Christianity will change your life.

But don't worry about it. Everyone learns and grows at their own pace. God won't force you too far, too fast. The main thing to focus on is Christ, and Him crucified. That is the core of Christianity, the Gospel ("good news" or "message") that gives us such hope and joy.

God has given you the gift of faith. One of the most heart-felt prayers in the Bible is "Lord, I believe. Help Thou my unbelief!!" It is asking God to help grow your faith. He will. And I pray that He will guide you to a loving, Christ-centered community of faith who will help you grow and guide your path in love and wisdom.

First, love Christ and know the surety of His love for you on the cross. His joy will fill you and guide you.

Everything else is secondary.

You're welcome.

The problem for all of us when dealing with the God of the Universe is that He can't take a back seat to anything. He's the God of it all. Nothing is more important, more vital to everything than Him. To put it directly, He is more important than all of the people you love. He is more deserving of your love than any of them, too. But, He has to make you see this. If He doesn't persuade you of His total Supremacy and worthiness of all the love and devotion you have, you will never see it, no matter how much those around you may attempt to persuade you it is so.

The neat thing about loving God fully is that in doing so we love those around us better. The more He grips our heart, the more we desire to be an expression of His love to those among whom we live. And His holy, merciful, gentle, strong love is far, far better than anything we can muster within ourselves. So, if you really want to love those around you well, if you want to give them the best kind of love possible, love God with all your heart.

Peace to you.

Well, first of all, I'm not sure if you understand exactly how it works, so I'll explain.

To start, first there was nothing. Then God made the universe, the earth, all plants and animals, and the first man. His name was Adam. Then God made him a companion, the first woman, named Eve. Lucifer, one of the top angels, got big-headed about his position and power. He, along with some other angels, started a rebellion. Lucifer is now known as Satan, or the Devil, and the angels that followed him are now referred to as demons. The world was perfect. There was no suffering, sin, or death, and Adam and Eve ate fruit and walked and talked with God. Now, in the Garden of Eden, the place God made for Adam and Eve, there was a tree that God told them not to eat fruit from, called the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. If they ate from the tree, they would be aware of good and evil, and sin, suffering, disease, pain, and death would be thrust upon them. Satan possessed a snake and lured Eve to the tree. He convinced her to eat the fruit. She called Adam, and he ate the fruit too. Then what I described a moment ago happened. They were mortal, and there was now sin and suffering in the world. Throughout the Old Testament, God repeatedly gave rules, and people broke them. Every once in a while, things would get so bad that God would bring judgement upon them, and they would turn back to Him. Back then, the head of your household would sacrifice an animal once in a while, usually a sheep, to forgive the family's sins. God told them to always take the best animal they had. It couldn't be sacrificed if it had ever been hurt, sick, or had broken bones. The idea was that your sins were being paid for by the animal, so that you wouldn't be held accountable to them, and you would be allowed in Heaven when you died. If you turned away from God and didn't pay for your sins through sacrifice, you would pay for them yourself in Hell for all eternity when you died. This is the Jewish belief. It was what God wanted back then.

Then, about 4,000 years after God created the earth, a prophecy made many times in the Old Testament was fulfilled, and the rules were changed. Jesus Christ, the Messiah, was born, not into a royal family, but from a poor virgin in a stable. He was, and is, both the Son of God and God Himself. See, there's God the Father, God the Son (also known as Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. They are three persons, but one being, one God, all at once. It doesn't seem to make sense, but that's because we aren't able to understand. God is all-knowing and all-powerful, and we would not be right to say we are at His level. Our intelligence is limited. Jesus lived the perfect life, and laid the new standard. This was that sacrifices and the traditional ways were no longer necessary. There was a new way into Heaven, because the old way was not working. Jesus performed miracles and taught the new set of rules, not in a rich palace, but in humble circumstances to normal people.

Of course, the same rules regarding sin applied. There were still the same things you were and weren't supposed to do. But many traditions were no longer required. A sacrifice still needed to be made, but in a different way. When Jesus was about 33 years old, Satan thought he had won. Jesus was beaten, mocked whipped, spit upon, and His hands and feet were nailed to a wooden cross. He suffered there hanging by those nails in His hands and feet for hours and hours as people continued to yell at Him and mock Him before He finally said, "It is finished!", and died. While on a cross, people were basically drowning as their lungs filled with blood and water within their body. They could usually stay alive for awhile by pushing up with their feet. To make sure people were dead when crucified, the Roman soldiers would break the person's legs. For Jesus, they stabbed Him in the side with a spear instead. Water and blood poured from Him. He was definitely dead. His disciples scattered, fled, and hid. Jesus was put in a tomb with a giant boulder in front of it to seal it, and it was guarded by two Roman soldiers so that no one could steal the body. The Roman army was the best in the world at the time, and the soldiers were well trained and disciplined. Guards were trained to have a 6-foot perimeter around them. If anything entered that circle that wasn't supposed to, they did anything and everything in their power to get it out. They knew 11 fishermen and a tax collector (Jesus' 12 disciples) were not going to be able to get past two Roman soldiers and a giant boulder to steal the body, and they were right. Satan seemed to have won.

Then two women, Mary Magdalene (who was absolutely NOT Jesus' wife, nor did she ever have sex with Him, contrary to what you may have heard) and Martha, who were friends and followers of Jesus, went to the tomb three days after the crucifixion to do the traditional act of cleaning and putting expensive perfumes on the body of a dead loved one. When they got there, the guards were gone (they had fled in fear), and the boulder had been moved out of the way. There was no body in the tomb! Then an angel appeared to them, and told them what had happened. Some angels had come, scared the soldiers away, and moved the boulder. Jesus had come back to life, and He had gotten up and walked out, just as He had predicted to His followers. He then appeared to many people, including His 12 disciples, His mother, the two women, and many other people over a span of a few weeks. He then gathered His 12 disciples, gave them some final words and ascended into Heaven.

Now, here's the amazing part, as if predicting and then succeeding in living an absolutely perfect, sinless life, dying, and coming back from the dead 3 days later isn't amazing enough. Remember when I said earlier that "a sacrifice still needed to be made, but in a different way"? Well, Jesus was that sacrifice. He was the sheep! He was perfect, and all the sins of everyone who ever lived, lives today, or ever will live, were placed upon Him, and forgiven! Remember the part about no broken bones for a sacrificed animal? Even that was true of Him. Instead of breaking His legs, the Romans pierced Him with a spear. He payed for eveyone's sins. He payed for your sins. All you have to do is confess that you are a sinner, accept His sacrifice as your own, and you will receive His forgiveness! Then you will be allowed into Heaven when you die. That's all it takes! He doesn't care what you've done. He loves You, He suffered and died a brutal death to pay the ransom for your soul so that you wouldn't have to pay for your sins in Hell, and all He wants from you is to accept His forgiveness and join Him in Heaven! Buy a Bible and read it. Go to church. But most importantly, talk to someone as soon as possible who is a Christian, tell them you want to accept Christ's forgiveness, and ask them to pray with you.

I hope I have clarified things for you. Ask me if you have any more questions. God bless you!

Oh, and one more thing. Don't be afraid. What's the worst that could happen if you accept Jesus or start going to church? God is more powerful and loving than you could ever comprehend. If He is with you, who can be against you? Trust Him, whatever situation you're in. Whatever you may be facing, put your life in God's hands. The end result will be perfectly better than if you try to deal with things on your own. He knows what He is doing. Just let trust Him and let Him take care of everything. Ask me if you have any more questions. God bless you!

Dear SterlingSilverRose,

Why not start one step at a time. You are rushing into too much things and too much thinking. Get yourself straighten up, make that decision to follow Jesus first. Accept Him as Saviour and Lord. And then, let Him leads you. Trust Him.. as He said in Jer 29:11 - "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you," declares the Lord.

Remember, you do not have to jump into the whole full of church's activities at one go. In time, you will be feeling wanting to do it more and more with willingly as you learn to love Jesus. It happens to me. : )
