Of course there are. I don't know about Monterey, I know of one in San Leandro that's a great one though.

See if there's a Vineyard Church in Monterey. They are pretty healthy. If there are any churches of any denom having Christmas pageants or concerts, attend those as a pretty painless way of checking out the church this time of year.

Protestant....Not picky, just somewhere where people actually talk to you... I grew up in a Baptist church then switched to a pentecostal one in Junior High..... I've decided I'm more non-denominational than anything else....

I'd be suprised if there wasn't a Calvary Chapel in or around Monterrey. I used to go to them and they're pretty typically newcomer friendly. They are non-denominational, charismatic. 'Less' charismatic than Vineyard.

Vineyard started when Chuck Smith [the founder of Calvary Chapel] and John Wimber [Smith's main worship leader] had a falling out over application of spiritual gifts. As a result, the sign gifts are usually more in evidence in Wimber's Vineyard churches than in Calvary Chapels. The 'holy laughter' thing started at Vineyard churches, but Vineyard has now [at least officialy] distanced from the more extreme stuff.
