  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This thread is about what is true intimacy and therefore what is not.

And so I would say this is related to Christian ethics and morals which are intended to help us find our way into true and intimate sharing with God and with one another as Jesus family people.

I have put this thread where I understand non-Christians are welcome to share and debate. And we all have had experience with what is not true and therefore genuine intimacy; so anyone should be able to share here, with something :)

One of the most freeing things for me was learning how intimately our Heavenly Father knows me. These 18 verses from Psalms 139. I heard it said once that intimacy is seeing into me. :)
Psalms 139 O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.

2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.

4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.

5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.

12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.

14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!

18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.

Brilliant, and it follows that in any relationship we should seek to be as open to the other as God knows us.

Very easy to write so very difficult to do.

To me, intimacy is a result of recognizing yourself in another. I am not christian, but the idea of atonement, or "at-one-ment" is synonymous with intimacy. When you see yourself in another, real intimacy is achieved. In the christian mystical tradition, various saints and visionaries describe having atonement with God/Jesus. For the rest of us, this sort of intimacy can only be found in another.
