  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

First off. here was my problem that i had before leading up to The internet being slow. i had a searchbar toolbar (that was spy ware) that was installed onto my familys Computer. and i finally got rid of that last night after several trys!

But now after that i did. i have been noticing that we're getting more Pop ups and just the whole internet is slow for me and my parents both. When i go to visit web sites and check my email etc.... its just slower then it used to be. The internet used to be real fast for us. but just recently its became slower by alittle bit:mad: . and we have XP Pro installed to!

and we have a pop up Blocker installed and Fire wall and all that installed.

DL and run Ad-aware and Spybot. Also run a virus scan. Pop ups will tax your bandwith. What kind of connection do you have? Dialup, cable, dsl? Find out what type of down load/up load speeds you're 'supposed' to be getting then go to www.dslreports.com and run a speed test on your connection. See what that says.

It prolly wont show you the exact cable company but when you signed up for broadband they should have told you what speeds to expect. For instance I'm using Yahoo DSL. I can expect up to 1.5 MB DL and 125 KB UL . When I test it at DSLreports.com it shows me a 1.3 DL and a 135 UL, that way I know I'm in scope.

See what I'm getting at?

You have to give a little more info. Around Connecticut the cable company promises upwards of 3 MB download. Your getting a fraction of that speed, but I don't know what speed your supposed to be getting. You are getting a considerable amount over Dial-up though.
Also what search bar did you remove? Was there a name that went with it? What program removed it? How did it get there in the first place.

Try downloading and installed the Google toolbar. That should help with a good amount of the pop-ups.

SEARCHBAR <---- thats was the search bars name. and it came from a Company called WhenuSearch. and i Removed the search bar just simply by going to My Computer and then to the Add and Remove Programs. it took me about 7 or 8 trys to remove it. but i finally got rid of it. and i don't know at all how it got installed onto our computer. i don't remeber at all clicking on something that i wasn't supposed to Click on. it just appeared there one night when i was looking up things online.

and the computers slowness is not as bad as like 56k or 14k but i still notice it some. and we also don't have awhole bunch of programs downloading onto our Computer. we only got like 16 total icons on the Desktop. we have learned the Hard way from when me and my parents had Dial-up to keep the Computer clean of alot of programs and just the basic things.

we did have that Google Toolbar and it does help some though:)

Ok, I did a few searches and found the following. DL a program called hijackthis. Scan your computer. Would might see an entry like this... C:\Program Files\WhenUsearch\Search.exe . Also check anything marked searchbar. If you see it, remove it. If you want to, post a copy of the log here and myself or someone else can take a look at the log for you. Then give you a better idea of what to remove.

Just for a FYI... I'm not 100% sure on the following so take what I say as advise and dont hold me accountable if something should happen. OK, that said...

Try removing the following...

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://server224.smartbotpro.net/7search/?003-nhp
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://default-homepage-network.com/start.cgi?new-hklm
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://server224.smartbotpro.net/7search/?new-hklm

Also make sure you're spybot and ad-aware are up to date. Set ad-aware to run first, after a reboot. Try that and tell me what happenes.

ok i did Delete and Remove thoses two files that you told me to Try. and hijackthis Deleted them and Removed them fine with no problem. and then after that i Restarted the computer and then once it restartd i ran Ad Aware. then now after doing all that the Computer does seem to be much faster:) to me anyways it Does. and also the pop ups are being caught by our pop up Blocker that we have installed more so now. then it was doing before hand!

but just on the safe site should i go ahead and Download Googles Toolbar again still? or you don't think it would be nesscary?

You can try getting symantec system works. It might be able to help a little. Other then that, just keep running spyware checkers and virus scans. If you really wanted to you could reformat your system every other month or so. This would be like starting on a clean slate. I tend to do this. Just remember to keep a decent backup of any/all documents and info you would need to move from one to the other.
