Just like there is no formula for leading worship, there is no perfect setup for the band. Each band is going to sound different based on the available skills and instruments, so that means you will need to utilise what you have. I believe this way you actually get the best out of your team. Whenever I lead, I play acoustic guitar, so my preference is naturally towards the guitars. Here's my rundown of what I'd like to see instrument-wise as the band expands

ONE PERSON: lead with just the acoustic. More than happy to go it alone at times.
TWO PEOPLE: bass - if not, then percussion - and acoustic
THREE: bass, drums/percussion, acoustic
FOUR: Electric guitar, bass, drums, acoustic
FIVE: Piano/keys, electric, bass, drums, acoustic - if available, I'd like to see BV's about here.
SIX: Woodwind (sax/flute), keys, electric, bass, drums, acoustic.

In our youth band, we're a five piece. I play acoustic and lead. I have a guy on bass who does BV's and an electric guitarist who also sings. A second guitarist is on deck but he occasionally plays keys, and finally our drummer. On bigger nights there are two girls (my fiance and the bassist's GF) who also sing with us.

There are no instruments that are needed really for worshipping God via music.

But at my church, we have:

Main Church Service:
acoustic guitar(occasionally two)
bass
drums
piano(not that the sound guys ever have it loud enough to hear it)
mandolin(occasionally)

Occasionally, we'll have a full orchastra with four or five violins, one cello, several trumpets/horns, various woodwinds, and an upright bass(aka: double bass).

Youth band:
acoustic guitar
electric guitar(two)
piano
bass(occasionally)

I believe the first instrument is a heart for God. In our youth worship we ust have two acoustic guitars but the heart for praise is definently there. On Sunday mornings occasionally, we have two acoustics, piano, and three vocalists.

we have 2 guitars, a bass guitar, a piano, french horn, clarinet, trumpet, organ (when we can con our organist into adjusting her settings LOL), and sometimes we have a couple of flutes ...
the flutes are sometimes to my chagrin, cause the old joke is apparently so true...

How do you tune 2 flutes....break one

All in all it's not a matter of what instruments, it's a matter of who's willing to serve...we started out with the french horn and clarinet LOL

The first time I attended the church I go to, I think I counted 13 worshipers on the platform, including the pastor, who mainly jumps up and down or waves a hand in the air. LOL! I love my pastor. I'm on the worship team now, and we have.......

leader / vocalist who plays accoustic guitar
usually 3 other vocalists (we have several who rotate, I'm one of them, sometimes play tamborine or other shakin' type thing)
bass guitar
drum kit
bongos, and sometimes jimbe
electric guitar
piano
electric keyboard
violin
one gal rotates between hammered dulcimer, clarinet, and pvc flutes/recorders
one guy either plays xylophone or baritone sax
one gal either plays classical flute or auxilliary percussion
oh yeah, then there's our pastor

Sometimes there are almost as many people on the platform as in the "congregation" -- but we are ALL worshipers before God, amen?

I agree pretty much with LivingWorship about the configuration, but we usually work with whatever we have. At our harp and bowl things, it's usually just accoustic guitar and various percussion instruments and as many singers / proclaimers as we can get!

Hi! I lead worship, and in my youth group, we've got me singing and playing acoustic guitar, two female backup singers, an electric guitarist, a bassist, a drummer, a keyboardist, and a violist. It's important to remember that if your band becomes big, you need to practice more. Don't make the mistake of getting so many musicians that the band is unmanageable.

we have four vocals, one of them lead. we have one acoustic (lead), one player who switches between electric and acoustic, one electric bass, one keyboard and a drumset. the guitars have floor effects units for various distortions and effects. but first and foremost should be hearts for worship. and that extends to the sound and projector people too.
