Inspiration!

Well, as writers, we know that sometimes it's hard to come up with an idea we want to stick with. So what do you do when you sit down in front of the computer or with a pen and pencil? Do you have stupid little rituals in order to "get the juices flowing"?

What I do is I play a good 10 minutes of tetris after looking over the few forums I'm on. After that, I'm set to go!

I go to the movies. Always helps. See some explosions, a romance scene, a crumbling temple, it really gets me going. Except for comedy movies.

Or I read on of my favorite books. Reading the Dominarian Apocolypse somehow gets me started.

I pretty much just look over my notes....or take a nap...or I stare blankly at my computer and wish I could come up with an idea. Or I run with an idea whether it's good or not....not little rituals for me

I read one of my favorite books....then listen to music. Tysen and Relient K are best for getting the creative juices flowing.

Best advice I ever got on writer's block was from my creative writing teacher: write through it. If the "juices" or flowing, great! Write it! If not, write anyway and eventually you'll come up with something.

i sit and stare at nothing or i go to sleep. i don't really have any rituals.

good question. i have lots of little "rituals" that inspire me. like neoscribe, i really get inspired after watching a good movie, especially an action or a romance. it just puts me in the mood for writing. sometimes reading my favorite books can inspire me as well, depending on what kind of day i'm having. if i'm in a depressed sort of mood, though, reading really good books just discourages me cause i feel like i can never write anything like that so what's the point? oddly enough, it's reading really crummy books that most inspires me to write, because i think, "oh, i can do better than that"(i know, it's very egotistical of me) and then inspiration hits. i also get inspired by reading books on writing, listening to beautiful music like The Lord of the Rings soundtrack, and, like Tariel, taking naps. for some reason i think more clearly right before falling asleep. i find the best method, however, is to not participate in any rituals at all, because i invariably end up procrastinating and not getting any writing done at all.

Thing is... I get inspired by really random stuff. I don't really feel like writing after a movie or a book (probably because I never want to sound like anybody else or write something someone else has written) but I really feel like it sometimes when I...

- Read Scripture (I wrote a short slant rhyme based on Isaiah 65:1 that can be found in the Poetry section)
- Do something with a friend
- Feel the touch of God
- Feel like I've been virtually punched in the gut
- Am otherwise having a really intense emotional experience
