  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I normally use the Unbound Bible for study as it does pretty much everything I need it to. However, one function it's really missing is an inflected Greek search engine.

Does anyone know of a study tool which provides that? Online is good. Failing that, Mac-compatible will do. Don't mind paying but free is better.

What do you mean by "Inflected" ?

Well - in English I mean if I put 'go' it will also bring back any instances of 'goes', 'going', 'went' and any other forms of the verb 'to go'.

Oh right.

Well, studylight, once you've found a verse with "go" in it, if you click "show Greek" it'll show you the Greek and then you can click on the verb translated as "go" and then it'll give you the list of every time the verb "to go" is used.

There you are, the 195/22 places that the verb "to go" is used in the NT :) (Exerchomai)

Sometimes if you don't have a lot of experience with Greek, you might miss out on a lot of scripture cross-references, for instance your example of the verb 'to go' doesn't cover about a half-dozen near synonyms (other Greek verbs) also often translated 'go', 'come', 'depart', 'arrive', 'travel' etc.

If you try a few of the English synonyms, you will have a better chance of scooping up some of the other Greek synonyms.

One of my favourite online tools for a quick check is here:

http://www.biblicalgreek.com/index.php?next=0&ba=gram_search&bible_book=&clean_lemma=pistos

You type in the Greek and it lists all the appearances of that form of the word in the NT, sometimes two or more pages, so check at the bottom if there are more.

None of these 'help' systems is a perfect or complete solution. But each has its advantages. I still use Strong's exhaustive Concordance, half the time just to find a verse based upon a vague recollection of a phrase, and the other half to find a specific Greek word in a given context. Even then I don't rely upon Strong's built-in lexicons (Greek or Hebrew) but refer to BAG (Bauer, Arndt, Gingrich), or Thayer's Lexicon (both equally good dictionaries (BAG is slightly better, but both are biased.)

Experience and practice is the best teacher in the end. I used to write out the letters of Paul in Greek for an hour every night. That helped alot toward getting some familiarity with Greek diction and grammar.

Hope this helps,
Nazaroo

That's not bad at all. But it's a real pity that it doesn't use Greek and Hebrew fonts.

It does, you have to install them.

They're on the site:
