The American Academy of Pediatrics had a artical this month that suggests that the Mortality and neonatal morbidity rate in GA < 27 weeks was higher compared to the rate in GA 27 - 32 weeks. The conclusion was: "one should carefully weigh whether or not to aggressively resusciate and treat these extremely premature infants.
To get an idea of the outcome, one study of 30 surviving children found that at two years of age there were three that were healthy and did not need further medical treatment. 2 at GA 25 months and one at GA 26 months. They found that 30% had a disability. For example, one was blind, two were deaf.
The question then becomes: At what point should doctors "aggressively resusciate" and when should they just let them die?
