Yes, I agree with Fishstix. That is a wide open question that has to be qualified to some degree. We rely on God for life, yet we stand as individuals before Him and answer for the life we have lived in this flesh, whether to life or to death. Those that accept Jesus as Savior have been judged for sin at the cross. Those who do not have to answer for their sins on their own merits and not God's gift to man through Jesus.

Re 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Ro 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

If you mean being an individual I have some secular mottos. The bible ones I have no idea because I've only just started reading it.

Matthew 5:14-16 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (A Christian should be easily recognizable!) :D

Matthew 7:13-14 Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (Following the crowd and or the materialistic, immoral values of society is not prudent, so one must certainly be an individual!) :thumbsup:

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Again, worldliness opposes godliness.)

1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character." (In order not to be corrupted, one needs to be an individual standing against the prevailing ungodly tide and or temper.)

2 Corinthians 6:14-18 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people." "Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you." "I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty." (Be separate=be an individual!) ;)

Philippians 2:14-16 Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life...:holy:

Psalm 4:3 Know that the LORD has set apart the godly for Himself; the LORD will hear when I call to Him.

Individualism , in general, is a term used to describe a theoretical or practical emphasis of the individual, as opposed to, and possibly at the expense of, the group. It is thus directly opposed to collectivism.

From a social standpoint, individualism is generally understood to be a context or environment in which individuals are the focal operating units as opposed to states or social groups; the social context has to be sustained by the beliefs of the people within it. The term has also been used to describe individual initiative and freedom of the individual in general.

Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.
And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.
And he spake this parable unto them, saying,
What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?
And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.
I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.
Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it?
And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.
Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.
<-----> Luke 15:1-10

Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;
Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins .
<-----> James 5:13-20

The word of the LORD came again to me, saying,
Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:
Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD.
If I cause noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so that it be desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts:
Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate.
Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, Sword, go through the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it:
Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered themselves.
Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast:
Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.
<-----> Ezekiel 14:12-20

The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.
<-----> Ezekiel 18:20-22

For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
<-----> Romans 14:11+12

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. <-----> 2nd Corinthians 5:10

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
<-----> 1st Peter 3:10+11

The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands . <-----> Proverbs 30:27

For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness
... <-----> Romans 2:14+15

Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. <-----> Psalm 60:11

Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men. <-----> 1st Corinthians 7:23

Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. <-----> Psalm 73:25

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. <-----> John 16:13

These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him
. <-----> 1st John 2:26+27

Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead ) <-----> Galatians 1:1

But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
<-----> Galatians 1:11+12

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. <-----> Philippians 4:13

All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any . <-----> 1st Corinthians 6:12

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. <-----> 1st Corinthians 10:23

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
For every man shall bear his own burden.
<-----> Galatians 6:1-5

This reminds me of verses that refer to God's people as "peculiar". I've heard it referred to as "God's odd" (but this doesn't really mean weird, but "special")

Exodus 19
5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

1 Peter 2
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

I know this doesn't really answer the original question though. I can't think of any verses that promote the idea of self-reliance as opposed to God-reliance, or caring more about self-insterest than caring for other people.

Every human being is a unique God's creation. Every human being is an Individual and very different from others. God wants to have friendship with each human being at a personal level. God loves the Individualism in a human being. He loves the different way in which each of us love/worship/regard Him. For this very same reason He has created us differently.

Hope the following Bible verses help to prove this point in some way :-

Psalms 139:14 - I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Galatians 6:15 - For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

God allows us to Imitate a holy/noble person, if we do that in a similar spirit as that person does. Coz Apostle Paul says "Be ye followers of me even as i am a follower of Christ."

But, God also appreciates and loves the Individualism in us. He wants us to grow in Him and know Him as an Individual in a personal way and it need not necessarily be the same way as another person experiences Him. We may have similarities but we are also different from each other. And we all constitute the Body of Christ. Different as Individuals but having the same Spirit of Christ in us. And the Love of Christ (and Love for Christ) unites us even though we are different from each other.

Hope that helps in anyway.

Hi Vincent,

That was a wonderful answer! I'm so glad that you answered this question. I couldn't think of the verses or find the words. But last night when I layed down to go to sleep, the verse from Psalms 139 that you quoted popped in to my mind, and I realized that it was the answer. So I'm glad to see your answer this morning. It is always so good to see just the right answer to an important question.

A man finds joy in giving an apt reply-
and how good is a timely word!
