Media Grading Trump on Curve Again. Inarticulate Policy Rant.

Corporate media for years has held conservatives and Republicans to lower standards. Here is another blatant example. Trump was asked how he'd tackle childcare? Here is a transcript of his incoherent word salad response.

“Well, I would do that, and we’re sitting down. You know, I was somebody — we had, Senator Marco Rubio, and my daughter Ivanka, was so impactful on that issue. It’s a very important issue.

"But I think when you talk about the kind of numbers that I’m talking about — that, because look, childcare is childcare, couldn’t — you know, there’s something — you have to have it in this country. You have to have it. But when you talk about those numbers, compared to the kind of numbers that I’m talking about by taxing foreign nations at levels that they’re not used to. But they’ll get used to it very quickly. And it’s not going to stop them from doing business with us. But they’ll have a very substantial tax when they send product into our country. Those numbers are so much bigger than any numbers that we’re talking about, including childcare, that it’s going to take care. We’re going to have — I look forward to having no deficits within a fairly short period of time, coupled with the reductions that I told you about on waste and fraud and all of the other things that are going on in our country.

"Because I have to stay with childcare. I want to stay with childcare. But those numbers are small relative to the kind of economic numbers that I’m talking about, including growth, but growth also headed up by what the plan is that I just — that I just told you about. We’re going to be taking in trillions of dollars. And as much as childcare is talked about as being expensive, it’s, relatively speaking, not very expensive compared to the kind of numbers will be taking in.

"We’re going to make this into an incredible country that can afford to take care of its people. And then we’ll worry about the rest of the world. Let’s help other people. But we’re going to take care of our country first. This is about America first. It’s about make America great again. We have to do it because right now, we’re a failing nation. So we’ll take care of it. Thank you. Very good question. Thank you.”

There's a clear double standard in the way corporate media are covering Harris and Biden compared to Trump's coverage. When Biden bombed at the debate, all media spoke about his disaster for days. Trump has just given his wordy policy plan on an important issue for today: childcare. Why isn't mainstream media talking about what Trump presented? Let's talk about his policy. If Harris or Biden came unhinged like this, it would be discussed for days, and rightly so. But this is just one of many resent ramblings.

Are you suggesting no one has reported on this? Do you actually read the news? I've seen at least a dozen stories talking about this incoherent response.
The count isn't zero, but at least in the big MSM, it's getting considerably less attention than Biden's performance did.

I searched nytimes.com for "trump child care" for the last week:

His comments on child care were only 4 days ago, so here's the results for "Biden debate" for the 4 days following his performance on 6/27:

That's more than Trump's count, but not a ton more. Stretch that date range out to a week and it explodes:

If Trump bombs the debate the way Biden did, I imagine we'll see more news stories about it, but I'm skeptical we'll see the sort of panic like we did with Biden.

The count isn't zero,

The count isn't even close to zero.

but at least in the big MSM,

Define "big MSM".

I use the Apple News app for much of my news reading. Almost all of the political headlines I see are positive for Harris and negative for Trump, regardless of the source or specific topic.

it's getting considerably less attention than Biden's performance did.

Perhaps because Biden's debate performance laid bare for all to see the concerning cognitive decline of the sitting President of the United States that was downplayed for so long. Trump has always given long, rambling responses. This isn't exactly news to most people who have ever listened to Trump speak. Contrarily, Biden's debate performance was alarming to a large group of people who bought the lie from the big MSM that Biden was "sharp".

If Trump bombs the debate the way Biden did, I imagine we'll see more news stories about it, but I'm skeptical we'll see the sort of panic like we did with Biden.

What would there be for them to "panic" about? Are you suggesting that the "big MSM" wants Trump to win this election?

There's going to be some difference in what the algorithms feed you vs what they feed me, but when I do the same google search (i.e. in the news section for four days following the event) for those two terms, I see more relevant hits for Biden, more results from the same sources (e.g. NYT or WaPo running multiple pieces), and more concern in the headlines:

In Trump's results, I see a lot of outlets running just one story, and there's generally less panic.

Not at all. I agree with you - I think they all want Trump to lose, which was why Biden's performance got them so spooked. Trump spewing nonsense is just what he does, so what's to talk about?

I think it comes down to the old principle of what is and what isn't news. There's a tired, old anecdote in journalism that "dog bites man" isn't news, but "man bites dog" is. In short, what's unusual is more newsworthy that what is commonplace.

Joe Biden performing as poorly as he did during the debate was unusual, thus it was newsworthy. Donald Trump rambling inarticulately, happens every day.

-- A2SG, just wait till tomorrow, Trump will do it again anyway....

They have to “take it easy on Trump” until it’s finally clear that he’s out of politics for good then they’ll turn it over to the historians. Won’t that be fun?

I can see that being the case; I imagine a few incentives for them to wait to see how things play out.

Perhaps it's not the thrust of the thread BUT:

What I interpet Trump as trying to say:
He (Trump) will tax foreign nations to the point the US prosperity will be so great that no one will be concerned about the cost of childcare.

What he's actually saying;
He (Trump) has not an inkling of awareness about childcare. He has no idea what the ramifications are for ordinary Americans. His daughter handled childcare, so everyone else can also, just like all the billionaires do.

This tells me that Mr Trump has no interest in childcare because the focus for him are his ‘numbers’.

The Trump campaign is scrambling for an answer.
If he believes Ivanka has a winning plan, how will that help now that she has disengaged herself from his campaign and any future job in a possible Trump administration?
Currently only Vance has come up with a plan--get 50 year old Grandma's at the peak of their careers to provide free childcare for their children who may have entry level jobs. That comes down to: too many women work.
Most work because one income won't support a family.
I do agree with conservatives that we need to encourage marriage to provide a greater degree of economic and emotional stability in families. But we can't do that by letting the children in the single parent families with inadequate resources go hungry.
The Democrats have a better plan--universal preschool to give all children a step up. Believe it or not, this would also affect our crime rate 18 years down the road.
Another good idea: 12 weeks maternal and paternal leave. Minnesota does it.

Just out of interest I did a little word-counting on this. Here are the results
we: 12
numbers: 8
country/nation: 7
talk: 7
childcare: 6
kind of: 4

Then I wondered what Trump actually had to say about child-care policy. Well, tax foreign importers, yes. America first. Not one word about delivery of support to children. Not one word about what children were in need of that a government might provide.

I have seen other bumbling rambles from Trump, but this seems to me to be one of the worst so far. Perhaps there was rain on the teleprompter.

The world is up against great evil ... in politics and government in general they are in the position to create and impose great evil because of their power ... no doubt evil is in both sides so as far as government goes .... we try and choose (vote) for what we believe is the "lesser evil"

We pick our "poison" (so to speak) ... knowing that it is all poison.

We do know ... right now there is great chaos in our country (and others) due to mass migration ... putting severe strain on many nations ... if the larger nations fall .... the whole world will fall. Migration needs to be a slow process else nations experience a "shock" to their systems. Likened to a great earthquake in a sense.

We live in uncertain times.
