• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I really need help, I find myself laughing at really bad times or for no apparant reason, like during a job interview one of the interviewers had a rather bulbus nose, and I felt myself ready to burst into a fit of laughter. I'm a terrible person for laughing at these things, but I feel really guilty about it and I can't help it.

I used to really freak my friends out when I burst into laughter for no reason as well, it was kinda funny at first, people just thought I was weird but now I think it's something serious.

I'm supposed to be working part time as a sales assistant in a store and I'm afraid I'm going to to start laughing at customers. :(

Is there a mental problem associated with laughing at inappropriate times, is there medication I could take or something or am I just a horrible person? :help:

i do pretty much the same thing, like if i'm at a doctors office i'll just start laughing, especially at the eye doctor for some reason, i've even had to leave a wake one time because i was about to start laughing (i know thats sick)
but the reason i do it, is because i just don't like serious moments too much, ill just think of something funny to pass the time or liven up the moment for me, i think if everyone went around being as serious as they do in these type of situations the world would just be boring
but maybe there is some underlying reason why i actually do this, adn it is not just cause i don't like to be serious...who knows?

but anyways, i feel your pain, while laughing isn't a bad thing, it can be if we're doing it at the wrong times
my advice is just try to go about your day, dont keep thinking"i hope i don't laugh" or something like that, just do your best not to worry about it, and i wouldn't think about actually taking meds, while this problem is an inconvenience(i can't spell), i think ti is something you can beat on your own

stay cool
i'll be praying for ya :prayer:

Maybe you can calm yourself down, by thinking hey, there's nothing that funny about it, heh :) I even tried uhh you know taking two fingers & kinda "hurting" yourself w/ your nails ?? (don't know the English word.....nothing really harmful, you know what little kids do to each other :))
:pray:ed for ya :)
God Bless u & have a good day !!

Are you one who usually represses his emotions or pretends to be somebody your aren't?

Cuz outbursts of laughter are sometimes the result of stuffing emotions until they burst out, usually in inappropriate laughter or unwarranted crying.

Yes, I nearly always feel like laughing during really serious moments, like when I'm at an interview, funeral, talking to a teacher, etc. I also laugh at the eye doctor, especially when they come right up to your face, which is really embarassing.

On occassion i have laughed at incredibly inopportune moments. I don't think it has anything to do with repressed emotions or schizophrenia - i think it's a mild form of hysteria and disbelief.

Often in life we have a period of almost surrealism, when one moment we are in our nice little safe world and the next moment the rug of security has been pulled from beneath us.

It could be the terrible news of the loss of a loved one, the job interview that has already been mentioned, etc.

Some people react in that way to bad, uncomfortable or upsetting situations. Lots of people do it. It's pretty normal. It's nothing, as was said previously, to do with schitzophrenia or repressed emotions. Not everything has a deeply-embedded psychological cause. You're fine, it's just how you respond. If you want to control it work on that, but you don't need to go to a shrink.

Well I told my friend about my laughing problem and he said he was appalled at me for laughing at people. :(

Sometimes I do laugh at other people, not nasty mocking laughter but i just laugh if I see someone strange. I really don't want to laugh at people because I know what being laughed at feels like, and now I'm just as bad as the people who laughed at me :(

Yikes, I think the schizophrenia idea is a bit extreme!!! There are seizure disorders that cause inappropriate laughing.... also Tourettes Syndrome...... or the repressed emotion/nervousness angle... Maybe pray about it before you're in a situation that requires a bit of seriousness???????

That's a good idea, thanks. I've already prayed about it during my usual prayer time, so why not during the situation.

It doesn't sound too bad, sometimes it's the brains way of coping in extreme worry or just playfullness. All the great comics see humour in everyday situations - it's not sick it's just a natural thing, as long as you keep it under control its fine. I think everyone finds little things funny, just be aware of your reactions and how it'd make the person feel if you did show the inward emotion.

oh my goodness, i thought i was the only one
last time i went, he was all gettin up in my face like they do, i just started crackin up for like ten minutes and then he kicked me out

but like supermagdalena said, i think you're fine, i do think its busted how you're friend reacted, i would think friends would be more understanding
my friends get where i'm coming from, but that could also be that im a pretty goofy person anyways, so when i'm not laughing, i'm laughing
like my name in this forum, 'geekbuster', its not like a serious name or anything(because i am a geek) its just a joke i have with my brothers/friends to make things more goofy
i think you're just in the same boat as me, where you like to make things fun, but then we get in the bad habit of doing it at times we shouldn't
