English Revised Version, Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
the breath
נִשְׁמַ֣ת (niš·maṯ)
Strong's 5397: A puff, wind, angry, vital breath, divine inspiration, intellect, an animal
Strong's Hebrew: 5397. נְשָׁמָה (neshamah) — 23 Occurrences
Brown-Driver-Briggs
לְנֶ֥פֶשׁ (lə·ne·p̄eš)
Strong's 5315: A soul, living being, life, self, person, desire, passion, appetite, emotion
Step 1: A physical body is formed.
Step 2: A detached breath/spirit from God enters the body, a breath breathed out from God.
Step 3: The person's self/soul is generated.
I think these steps are true for everyone.
Elsewhere, ESV Job 27:
Strong's Hebrew: 7307. ר֫וּחַ (ruach) — 377 Occurrences
The meanings of H5397 and H7307 overlap. Brown-Driver-Briggs:
The (detached) breath [H5397] of life is related to the (undetached) Spirit [H7307] of God.

3 as long as my breath [H5397] is in me,

4 my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit.
Strong's Hebrew: 7307. ר֫וּחַ (ruach) — 377 Occurrences
The meanings of H5397 and H7307 overlap. Brown-Driver-Briggs:
- breath of mouth or nostril

- spirit, as that which breathes quickly in animation or agitation = temper, disposition
- spirit of the living, breathing being
