In a first, U.S. blames Russia for cyber attacks on energy grid

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration on Thursday blamed the Russian government for a campaign of cyber attacks stretching back at least two years that targeted the U.S. power grid, marking the first time the United States has publicly accused Moscow of hacking into American energy infrastructure.

Beginning in March 2016, or possibly earlier, Russian government hackers sought to penetrate multiple U.S. critical infrastructure sectors, including energy, nuclear, commercial facilities, water, aviation and manufacturing, according to a U.S. security alert published Thursday.

The Department of Homeland Security and FBI said in the alert that a “multi-stage intrusion campaign by Russian government cyber actors” had targeted the networks of small commercial facilities “where they staged malware, conducted spear phishing, and gained remote access into energy sector networks.” The alert did not name facilities or companies targeted.

The direct condemnation of Moscow represented an escalation in the Trump administration’s attempts to deter Russia’s aggression in cyberspace, after senior U.S. intelligence officials said in recent weeks the Kremlin believes it can launch hacking operations against the West with impunity.

It coincided with a decision Thursday by the U.S. Treasury Department to impose sanctions on 19 Russian people and five groups, including Moscow’s intelligence services, for meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and other malicious cyber attacks.
Russia is not our friend, and it is a relief that the sanctions voted on a year ago are FINALLY being imposed on Russia.

Russia is not our friend

I don't think most people have been arguing otherwise. Being skeptical of the claims of the screeching tism of Hillary supporters following the election isn't the same as saying we think Russia is our BFF.

I don't know about 'most', but I wouldn't say it's an uncommon sentiment, either. I've definitely come across more than a handful of Putin and Russia supporters on this forum alone.

I've seen a couple, but "more than a handful" seems dubious. I'm accused of being one all of the time because, while I accept that Russia meddled via ads, etc., I'm also aware that it's something every country does, including ours.

The focus of this thread should be the fact that the electrical grid is a target. The article includes:

But Thursday’s alert provided a link to an analysis by the U.S. cyber security firm Symantec last fall that said a group it had dubbed Dragonfly had targeted energy companies in the United States and Europe and in some cases broke into the core systems that control the companies’ operations.
So they have gotten into core systems of some electrical companies. Are people ready if the grid goes down for a period of time?

This is a concern:
Russian Hackers Attacking U.S. Power Grid and Aviation, FBI Warns

Many of the targeted power plants are conventional, but the attacks included at least one nuclear power plant in Kansas, Bloomberg News reported in July. While the core of a nuclear generator is heavily protected, a sudden shutdown of the turbine can trigger safety systems. These safety devices are designed to disperse excess heat while the nuclear reaction is halted, but the safety systems themselves may be vulnerable to attack.

By now Trump has to be taking the meddling of Russia seriously. Hacking emails is one thing but assassinations and intruding into our infrastructure is a clear threat. Hopefully he will wake up and start taking cyber security seriously but I won't hold my breath.

Maybe Putin will cut him some slack over this one. After all, he is President and will have to seem to be doing something about an attack so blatant.
