Important question: Help Please

Hello everyone,

I've been a Christian all my life. I'm not really the most educated person in the world so I'm hoping someone can answer a question that's been nagging at me for a long time. I've always been too embarrassed to ask anyone about it but I really need to know. Here it goes. In the Garden of Eden, Cain goes on to have a family. Who is his wife? It doesn't seem to say. Thanks for your help.

Nothing to be embarrassed about. We tend to think of laws and sensibilities according to what we know now. When Cain was living mankind was so close to perfection there was no illness, imperfection as there is today. There was no population such as today. The laws against incest weren't necessary as they are today for God had given the instruction to multiply and populate the earth. Even though Adam and Eve sinned, they still had to be obedient and as Jehovah's purposes do not change and mankind could safely marry it was allowed by God. When the time came for it to be changed, he gave instruction that it was no longer so. This is simplified but then, I am a simple girl. Hope I helped.

Hi Scott,

The bible just doesn't give the years but Cain and Able are Adam and Eve's children as well. It's just that the bible doesn't say, 17 years later, etc.

We are all children of Adam and Eve, every human being is a descendant.

Why is it that people ask this question as if they are puzzled by how it could be for Cain, yet no one ever thinks about how Seth got married or anyone got married after the fall of man?

When we look at things objectively, we realize that if there were only one set of people, then it would have to be that the children would marry each other in order to propagate the people.

Guess, I word what most of you have said in my own words.

Adam and Eve didn't have children till they were driven out of the garden by the Spirit of God.

I don't think there were other families around. The only rule God had given once they couldn't eat of the tree anylong was to multiply.

Adam's children would have mated with their brothers and sisters. There was no law against it. The rules against incest are there because after just a few generations of intermarriage the recessive genes become more dominate and there are more birth defects, etc. So this is were the incest laws come from not from an arbitray law given by God.

I once read an antroplogy book that pointed out rulers often intermarried to keep their wealth and position of rule because the intermarriage meant there was no one outside the family that could challenge their authority.

In the middle ages the Catholic church made it a sin to marry anyone that was ones 7th cousin or closer. When people didn't travel far from home that really meant that almost everyone was within the 7th order removed and so most marriages were incestuous accoding to RCC law. As a result of this the easiest way to get a divorce was to find a way to show one had married a cousin.

There were other people before Adam and Eve....mankind is created on the 6th day....

God rested on the 7th day, correct?

God "formed" Adam after the 7th day of rest....correct?



not a retelling of chapter 1, but a continuation...


mankind in chapter 1, the individual Adam in the 2nd chapter....made sure by the particle and article in the Hebrew....



There were nations of people for Cain to be afraid of, and to marry from....



Even in Noah's days, after the flood, there were civilizations around, because one of his sons went into other nations....and his other sons became nations.


The ethnos, were created on the 6th day, and God said ALL was good....all races are good....

Adam=ready complected man, was not formed until some time after the 7th day of rest, possibly thousands of years after...for a day to God is as a thousand to us...

This is total and complete error.

All of man came from Adam and Eve. They had many children, not all of whom followed in the fear of the Lord. Then there was also the devil who sought out to murder the faith of the faithful.

Had I more time I would go deeper, but I am sure there are many Lutherans here that will be able to do so wisely.

Also see writings of 1st century pharisee Josephus (chptr 2 book 1 of Antiquities) http://www.ccel.org/j/josephus/works/ant-1.htm He mentions Adam & Eve also had daughters.
