I think we will have to encourage more immigration to correct the imbalance in our ageing population, so we should try to improve the ways we integrate migrants into our society rather than seeing it as a problem.
I work closely with an engineer we recruited from India a few years ago. He is highly educated and well motivated compared with many UK people we have hired in the past.
Immigrants often have more appreciation of the opportunities we have in this country and are more willing to work to better themselves than people who were born here and take it all for granted. I also welcome the diversity they bring, giving us first-hand experience of other lifestyles and cultures.

I agree with that.

May I ask what race you are?

I live in a majority white community. and the views on immigration is appaling. The media is one of the biggest problems in this.

Me, my Dad and Bro had an argument when I said we should bring in more immigrants and I don't think it should be an issue.

It makes me REALLY angry

Well i'm not sure of the general Scottish view on immigration.

But I know the general English view on immigration. and people have the nerve to say it's not racism. The papers encourage the anti-immigration behaviour

I'm all for immigration, I am just at a loss as to why people still want to come to such a racist and unwelcoming country as ours. It is shocking. The Telegraph ran a survey recently which had some awful statistics as to how many of us would be upset if a 'family of colour' moved into our street, and then some have the cheek to moan about them no 'integrating'! Chance would be a fine thing!

So many people I know say 'Well they come over here and refuse to integrate with us'

Yet funnily enough a few months later their saying 'Have you noticed there's a lot more black people around this town?' like its a bad thing

I'm all for it, immigrants bring big benefits to the country, our hospitals would suffer if it wasnt for immigrant doctors and nurses, being one example of the benefits.

I also agree with introducing citizenship courses though. Heck id go on one if they started them.

My attitude to immigration is one of slight indifference if they want to come here and live and work then fair enough. I don't really care.

I don't think that they should unwillingly abandon their former culture in an attempt at assimilation. If they don't even require the language to work then they don't really even need to learn it though it would be of benefit to themselves.

To be honest I think that all borders should be open to free movement of people however there are economic implications of this that would have to be addressed by sorting out problems on a global basis before hand.

Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised by the views expressed here. I really hate all that tabloid nonsense about immigrants and asylum seekers flooding the country, and alot of people seem to have absorbed these ideas.

immigration is the only realistic way to fill the skills gap crisis that faces the county especailly with the incresing proliferation of people going into higher education which only increases the problem. Immigration brings also some much needed variety and culture to this small island.

Frankly, the Labour government has created a crisis scenario in the UK especially in big cities such as London due to a flood of immigrants from economically disadvantaged backgrounds coming into the UK. Remember the channel tunnel fiasco when immigrants from Europe and beyond were trying to escape the continent illegally so as to get into the UK? Well, that fiasco happened under the Labour government and they should take the blame for it. Immigration should be more tightly controlled so that only those who are economically benefitial or are future economic beneficiaries such as higher education students should be allowed in. However, human rights lawyers do have a job so that those who do face a genuine threat of being killed back in their native country should be given asylum. However, asylum is a touchy issue which requires a careful eye. There's a danger here that by simply letting in more and more asylum seekers in the UK is merely playing a softie softie approach and ignoring the deeper issue which is to actually go out there and try and do something to solve it at the grass roots. Simply opening the floodgates for more and more asylum seekers is a rather sad sign, not surprising considering the fact that the current government is engaged in an unjust war in Iraq which is oppressing the people there and turning them into asylum seekers!!! How bizzare. Why do we in this country insist on creating asylum seekers of our own making? We've already done a messy job of it in Afghanistan and now we're doing the same, if not worse, in Iraq! So not only will there be more asylum seekers from countries around the world but also whole segments of the Middle East population will now seek entry to the UK!

Britain is already one of the most densely populated places on earth, we should be trying to reduce the population here.

The skills gap can be filled by giving work permits instead of citizenship. The worker can then stay as long as they are needed by gaining extensions to their permit.

Political asylum seekers at risk of their life, should be accomatated until they are safe to return home, but should not be given citizenship.
