Hello, brothers and sisters! I've been gone quite a while, part of which was not having internet service for more than a month-wow, can you imagine? Well, I survived, and fairly easily too, amazingly enough! LOL

Anyway, I had to get on here and share the good news! I just found out that my church teaches TOTAL DEPRAVITY and UNMERITED FAVOR.

Our pastor has been since the first of the year, teaching about grace. In an unusual move, he told us he doesn't even know how long this series is going to be. He started out with the simple stuff, he likened it to using a broad stroke on the painters canvas, the general stuff--but today he said he was going to get out the fine brush and start filling in the details. I was very nervous, because i know what I believe, but didnt' know what he was going to say. I had always assumed that this church taught "free will, etc etc". At any rate. He started out telling a story about a man on a boat during a storm, getting to close to the edge and falling over. This man cannot swim, and starts to drown. He goes down several times and finally he cannot help himself any more. God looks down and sees him drowning, with just his fingers above water. He(God) throws a life preserver directly to the man, over his hand even, and all the man has to do is grab on--Tim(our pastor) goes on the say, "isn't God amazing, that He would throw us a life preserver and all we have to do is choose to grab it?"--of course at this time, my heart has sunk down to my knees, and I'm crying out in my head, "but but but..." and then the clincher. Tim goes on to say "but this is a LIE, it's heresy" I just about jumped out of my seat right there, praising God!

He goes on to list all the verses we try to use to prove total depravity, and tells about us being BENT away from God, that NO matter if God were standing DIRECTLY in front of us, we would NOT choose Him. And on and on. I was crying, I was so happy!

This is as far as he got today on the whole thing, but I'm really looking forward to the next few weeks--I went up to Tim after service and thanked him, explaining how I was soooo glad he was teaching this, etc etc, and he said to keep studying, because there was alot more to come!

Tim ended the talk today with the same story of the man on the boat, excecpt this time the man has drowned and lay at the bottom of the ocean, dead--and God looks down and sees him--He doesn't throw a life preserver, no, He jumps in, swims down to the bottom of the ocean, finds YOU among all the dead, and breathes life into you, and saves you.

WOW, what an awesome God we serve! And I praise God that He has given me a church that is not afraid to teach the truth about God's awesome MERCY and POWER!!!

Thanks for letting me share!! I"m sooo happy!!!!

Welcome back Sister  ,
you came in just like a breath of fresh air , I have had to give up on a couple of Arminians who arrogantly keep twisting scripture and saying Calvinists are liars and deceivers ....... their pride will be their undoing .... but it's so great to hear a report like this , if I wasn't so kind hearted I would shove it right under their noses , but I know that they cannot receive the truth .....

Bless you Sister
I am so pleased for you

thanks, guys....
I'm still smiling over it! I remember a while back when I first "claimed" calvinism, I was a bit worried because I really love my church and wasn't sure what was taught. To be quite honest, the weekend services usually contain mostly 'milk' and not much 'meat', because our church devotes itself to the irreligious folk, those who have a bad view of church in general, or were churched out as kid, or just thinking about the whole christainity thing. So alot of the weenkend services are geared towards the new believer, and learning how to "live" your christianity in practical real world ways. Wednesdays are geared towards the maturing christian and teach on alot more meaty topics. And we have quite a few "University Classes" that people can go to to mature more. So, it was really suprising to hear Tim up there telling people that palagianism was heresy and a lie. Whoa! I can't wait to hear the other things he talks about in the coming weeks. I'm not sure where this is going, but after affirming Total Depravity, and telling us that we would never EVER choose God even if He stood right in front of us......I'm sure it's not leading down the road of Armanianism!! Another leader in the church explained to me that during the time between Christmas and Easter, there isn't as many "new" people coming to church, so Tim felt it was a good time to straighten some things out, to teach an important truth.
I'm not sure if you guys understand how exciting this is to me...since most of you already attend a reformed church.....but I was really thinking about trying to find a reformed church in the area and very torn about it 1)because my husband and kids love it and he wouldn't understand my reason for leaving and 2) because I really believe in the mission of this church-which is all about reaching the unchurched and irreligious and making a real impact in our community--, and would hate to have to leave--but I don't think I could sit through teachings I felt were not right.
My husband is not yet 'reformed' in his thinking, but respects our church leaders alot, so I think he'll listen to them.....
I think God has really answered my prayers (again! :) ) by leading Tim to address this issue at this time.

Oh, by the way, I went out and bought Grace Unknown by R.C. Sproul. It's excellent so far--have you guys read it and what do you think of it? I'm only 50-60 pages in right now, but I really like how he writes so far.

Hi sister

One ofthe best threads I ever read !!!
I even quoted it today to a friend in a PM ......... It is so moving to read your account , may I say two things

1. I am 'Jealous' that you have had this wonderful experience :D
2. I discern that you better pray for Tim , it will not be long before he has to 'suffer' some way for speaking out so clearly for the Lord , I pray The Lord protects him .Amen!

Greetings Cygnus

cyg, brother, you make me

Yes, I will definately be praying for Tim, there may be consequences for his speaking out for the truth...I can only pray that God opens the hearts and minds of the many great christians in the congregation to the truth.

I really hope i'm not jumping the gun here, and turn and turn out to be totally disappointed, but really, when Tim tells us palagianism is a heresy and goes on to explain the truth of Total Depravity, where else could he be going?

I guess I need to just take a deep breath and see what the next few weeks hold! I really shouldn't count my chickens before they are hatched!
I don't want to set myself up for major disappointment.....yet, just the fact that he affirmed total depravity is a good thing.....

There's a really good book called, "Easy Chairs, HArd Words", by, I think Doug Phillips maybe your husb would like to read?

I'll have to check that out. Never heard of it.

To everyone in general:
I was talking to my hairdresser today(she is a member of our church also) and she was telling me how psyched she was about the talks also. Turns out she is Reformed/Calvinist also! It was her husband, who's been studying with Tim, our pastor, who told Tim he needed to step up to the plate and teach this. Right now, her husband is leading a bible study with all of the elders on this very topic, discussing and comparing Calvinism with Armianism, Free will vs predestination etc etc, so that all the elders will be on the same page as the pastors. Apparently, our Pastor of Maturity was not quite on the same page as Tim on this belief, and has been doing some serious study and prayer, and has come around! This whole thing has been in the works for 6-9 months now. God works in wonderful, mysterious ways!

:amen:

Ok, an update.

Tim is most definately, positively and with out a doubt teaching the Doctrines of Grace. Praise God!

This weekend he spoke on the meaning of foreknowledge and predestination. He ran out of time while he was speaking of predestination, but let it be known that we are Elected from the beginnining of time.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do this, but I'm going to give you our website address, the messages are available in Quicktime to listen to. I'd love feedback if anyone is truly interested....

www.crossroadswired.com

Tim is a fine speaker, and I think he's doing a fabulous job teaching this difficult dotrine.

Please pray for Tim as he continues this series. We all know the passions(positive and negative) this kind of teaching arouses.

One thing I'm truly excited about is the fact that this is such a large church. We have on average 2000 people a weekend, and almost 800 members of the church. For 2000 people to be exposed to Reformed beliefs is sooo cool!
