  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

This would make for a worthy website:
http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994503
It's a serious subject so it may take some time to do well if you did.

Actually, I was thinking about making a website about cheese. But I'm sure the dairy people have already beaten me to it. :sigh:

That's the beauty of the Internet, there's room for many different sites! One of the HTML books at the college used a website about cheese as an example. I didn't take the class, but I tutored a guy in html, and the book had something about using meta tags to indicate the subject of the page, and as best as I can remember, the quote was, "Be sure your meta tags are relevant. You can include various descriptions of chese in the meta tag, and search engines will turn up your page as a result, even if the only thing on the website is a picture of your favorite NASCAR driver."

Well, a few serious comments. One, there is discussion in industry publications these days that Web pages (classed as "broadcast" technology) is not the hot place to be, that "narrowcast" is (like delivery of stock quotes, weather, news, business-to-business services, product prices, etc. etc.) Now, the two compliment each other, because to find your narrowcast customers you need to have a Web presence. The technologies to support narrowcast are things like Web services, portals, SOAP, etc.

Of course, as was pointed out earlier in this thread, Web pages are a form of writing and the old advice to write what you know is just as true as ever. If you don't feel a burning interest in a topic it will be hard to convey a sense of excitement to your visitors nor will you keep at the site developing and improving it, you'll lose interest. This is even truer with narrowcast because it's even more trouble to support and so you'd want to know that it was worth it for yourself (money) or for others (helping others with a disease, etc.)

Finally, I'm interested in your signature (Matthew 7:14 and paradise). I'd love to discuss that in a separate thread or PM. Feel free.

I hope you have a blessed Christmas.

Are you refering to rss feeds here?

Yes with the question and the comments that followed I got the idea that he just wanted to put up a report style web site with no real need for regular updates.

Wow, didn't even read that. Rather misleading/misinformed from what is written in scripture about that.

Hi Durelen,

You're right, I'm no expert on this narrowcast stuff. I just got the impression that the direction these days is toward providing targeted content on demand to interested parties using new protocols (maybe not the right word). I haven't got the alphabet soup down yet, but yes RSS was one of the things I was thinking of, but I was also thinking of other articles I've read (but are now a bit cloudy) about some of the new Microsoft offerings in .Net and Longhorn.

I just wanted anyone starting out with a brand new Web page to think about that. It's just so easy to do a Web page these days (so many products offer export as HTML, for instance) that I figured to make it a bit more technically challenging and educational one might want to look into the newest approaches. But if the OP doesn't want to get into the bleeding edge stuff, then please ignore that part of my comments.

Yeah, the Matthew 7:14 reference needs to be put into the context of a loving parent. I think any parent knows the challenge of "helping" their children find happiness AND independence. I think our loving Father wants us to be happy and independent now and forever. What kind of children are we though? I still think it would be a good thread.

Lol I never said you were or were not and expert in this :) I thought you had rss in mind but was wondering what other things you were referring to. I remember when push technology was the big thing and I’m sure there will be new technologies to come. I like rss, I have my Linux system set up to receive many rss feeds. One of my home pages receives an rss feed and scrolls it over the page as well. Yes there is far more than HTML to work with. And not only for computers but there is a great demand for PDA and Cell Phone designed pages/services.
