  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

IC = Jesus XC = Christ NIKA = Conquors hence "Jesus Christ Conquors. The Priest says it over the Eucharist during Divine Liturgy. They are Greek Letters and is always painted with Christ in Iconography.

When does he say this? I'm nost saying you're wrong, it's just that I serve almost every week and I have never heard that., BUt, I do know that there are many silent prayers. THat is an awesome statement.. especially for the preist to say during the DL over the Eucharist. I don't know... it's just so powerful.

I am not entirely sure. I guess it depends on the priest and how he says it. I know my priest says alot of the prayers in Greek. And that is usually one of them. I think it is when he is blessing the bread, but I most likely wrong. I also know alot of the Blessed Bread has the IC XC NIKA baked into it. I was serving during the Holy Cross services this Sunday and had to cut up about 30 loaves so that part I am definatly sure of.:liturgy: :help:

Yeah, ours definitely has this always. I believe it is a requirement (not that it's invalid otherwise, but it's not just a choice), but I could be wrong.

John, you should read a service book. :p :)

It (should) describe the 'silent' prayers and what the priest does, and the IC XC NI KA plays heavily into the preparation of the Eucharist for the faithful to partake. I believe the Antiochian one (red with gold cross on cover) does this, and I know the Hapgood book definitely has it.

Yeah, I know what is on the bread itself. But the poster said that the he believed the priest actually SAYS this over the bread near the epiclesis. And I don't remember a priest ever SAYING this. I could be totally wrong. Also, I think the poster (I forget who it was now) goes to a Greek parish whereas I have only ever gone to parishes of slavic heritage (OCA and Russian). So, either I missed this part every week (very possible since these prayers in my Church are actually kept "silent" as the name would lead anyone to believe) or it's not part of the tradition. If the priest does say it during the DL then that is pretty cool and I will focus in on my priest's whisperings for here on out :)
