It shows God your humility and humbleness in not being able to do something, or everything, on your own. Of course God knows what we need or are going to ask for, but that's not the point, and neither is whether we get a positive answer.

Praying for something strengthens our relationship with, and trust in God, no matter what happens!

Now that's way easier said than done, and of course I'd be completely devastated if the things I'm praying for at the moment didn't happen, but it's just something everyone has to figure out on their own through prayer and by reading the Bible!

Job 42:8
Now therefore, take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and My servant Job shall pray for you. For I will accept him, lest I deal with you [according to your] folly; because you have not spoken of Me [what is] right, as My servant Job [has]."

1 Thessalonians 5:14-23
Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil. Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

is god not all mighty and all knowing, i mean coming to god with a problem would be like me pointing out that it is day or night. So that is my question, hoping to understand why people pray if god is obviously already aware of the problem?
Given that His human creations have freewill, God does not get involved with our lives without our permission. Prayer is the granting of that permission.

Since God loves us, He wants us to participate in His work. Prayer is a way we can affect creation in a divine way. It is finite compared to God's power, but a great gift, no? Think also of God as Father. How much does a father want his child to do things so that the child can learn, and develop skills, and even their relationship. Think of prayer not as only us saying "I want this and that", it is also our communion with the Divine. If we listen God will also say what He wants of us too. :)

Toughie. Here's my take on it: God does have a plan for us. But he gave us free will. We decide if we will let his plan happen or not. If we don't, we can end up in hell. When people say God knows everything we do in our future, I think that means God has a future planned out for us. . . and if we follow his plan, we will reach what he sees in our future for us. I pray because of the feeling it gives me and that I know he's always listening. His door is never closed, cell-phone (haha) never off. And he DOES answer every prayer, just not in ways we want sometimes. It's all part of the plan. ;)

We pray for our daily needs, for the good of others, to forgive & be forgiven, to be kept from evil,to fulfill the commands to love God & our neighbor as ourself, for God to guide us in trying to do good. In the name of God the Father, the Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
