  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

“I was a stranger and you did not welcome me.”

A reflection by Father James Martin, SJ (SJ stands for the Society of Jesus aka the Jesuits).

Father James doesn't mention it and I don't think we've discussed it here on the forum yet in this context, but as I read through this article I was reminded of the Book of Ruth, which I think is relevant to this discussion, and to current events. It's in the Old Testament. Only 4 pages or so in most bibles. It's my favorite book of the Old Testament aside from Tobit.

Of course we have to welcome the stranger to our country. ( Australia in my case)My only reservation, from a pragmatic point of view, is there needs to be infrastructure ready for large intakes and rigorous checks on people's past, whatever their nationality, race or religion. I felt sorry for Germany last year, who had to take huge amounts of refugees on short notice. How would Australia have coped? We've been pretty lucky so far.
But the move by Trump was totally disrespectful I agree and so do the Catholic Bishops in America, it seems.
