• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I want to feel bad for my sin

So I’ve been a Christian my whole life and really fell in love with Jesus at 16. Slowly went down a bad path of sexual sin and then became depressed. I got out of the depression and started to follow god again and loved learning about him. But whenever I watch porn and touch (sorry for the detail) I don’t really feel convicted.. I resist sexual sin cause I know it’s wrong but I feel like my conscience isn’t working if I slip up... is there a way to get healed of that? I haven’t done sexual sin with anyone else in a long time but I’m worried I wouldn’t feel bad. Is there a way to change?

Don't let the sin keep you down, believe that Jesus died for you and that sin then the guilt will go away as just believing will save you from all sin, as we all sin every day and this is why Jesus died.

I would say stop watching the porn, put it off your computer. And pray for a change for you.

Replace the porn with good Christian stuff on Youtube and other good places.

Praying for you!

Hello and welcome to CF.

It's perfectly legitimate to pray to God and ask Him for a repentant heart. It's not "feeling bad" per se that we need, but repentance. Repentance will help us to hate sin though, and when we are truly repentant, we will be grieved by our sin. When we progress a bit in that, we will be grieved even by the temptation to sin and be more prepared to struggle against temptation, whatever it's source.

There are other sorts of practices, such as those kinds of thoughts and meditations that monks use. But it's not the best first step.

I would first ask God's help, and try to be mindful of temptation at the first suggestion of it, and cut it off. It's most effective in the moment of struggle to turn to God, in prayer, reading Scripture, etc.

Asceticism for the body is also an extremely effective means of subduing the flesh, which is what you are trying to do. St. Paul writes if this. In our Tradition, fasting has been used since the beginning of Christianity. (We don't fast from all food more than partial days - it is not necessary to starve oneself. Just refraining from things like meat and dairy, and such - similar perhaps to what many might call a "Daniel fast" is enough of a challenge for most folks that it is effective in helping put down the flesh.)

Please just know that there are answers for your question, and there are tools within Christian tradition which the Apostles and other wise Christians have taught.

Again, welcome to CF. God be with you.

Welcome to the forums!

It may take time to develop sensitivity to the prodding of the Holy Spirit convicting of sin. And God does not clean up every sin right away. That (God cleaning us up) is called "sanctification" and takes time - for some things a LOT of time.

And that is OK.
