I thought that 1981 is a bit old for a millennial.

The older generation has been railing against millennials for so long that they've forgotten a new generation has come to pass and they associate all younger people with "millennials". The people usually called millennials these days are in fact Gen Z.

according to pew, it's 1981 to 1995. Majority of Millennials are in their 30s with a handful in their late 20s and some now 40 and beyond... Gen Z as others have stated are being mislabeled..

Gen Z sometimes mislabels as well. My husband and I are in a board game group with mixed ages. One of the 18 year olds (Gen Z) called someone born in 1976 a "Boomer"! 1976 is pure Gen X. People these days tend to just think anyone over 40 is a Boomer and anyone under 40 is a Millennial, but they forget entirely about Gen X and Gen Z. I'm almost 38, and I'm a Millennial - but I have no debt (I graduated right BEFORE the recession), and avocado toast was never a thing. I did get participation trophies growing up, though. My husband is Gen X (45 years old), and my mom was actually a member of the frugal Silent Generation, so I'm mostly anomalous. My dad's a Boomer though, and my Gen X husband's parents are both Boomers as well.

Silent - 1928 to 1945
Boomer - 1946 to 1964
Gen X - 1965 to 1980
Millennial - 1981 to 1996
Gen Z - 1997 to 2012
Gen Alpha - 2013 to present

These are the most accepted definitions per Pew Research.

Personally, I think that Millennials should be those who were coming of age at the turn of the millennium and who are aware of and experienced how the world changed after 9-11.

Yeah, it's subjective. Always viewed millennials as between 1985-1995 or something.

Remember once calling the Columbine massacre high school students as "gen X" and someone chastised me for it.. lol. According to some definitions my own mother would be from Gen X which just feels weird to me.

Always kind of wished I was from Gen X. The name itself sounds cool... "millennial" always sounded corny to me.

This is true. 1981 would mean a 40 year old now.
Yeah Millennials entering our forties is freaking me out. My wife turns 40 this November, I'll be 40 in 2026.
