"Life isn't just to be endured, it's to be enjoyed."
Gordon B.Hinckley

Some of you have probably heard this quote, but I have a very hard time believing that we should enjoy life. There are many unfortunate and sad moments in our lives , and many of us give in to pleasure and fantasies. These things make me question this quote. I'm starting to realize that Life is mainly to endure, not to enjoy at all, and only God can get us through life, if we trust in His word and endure.

So which viewpoint on life should we believe in?

I think we should enjoy this life as much as we can while we're here. We aren't meant to be part of this world, but rather, part of the body of Christ; however, that shouldn't stop us from enjoying the blessings God gives us in this life.

Come on. Even people who drew a very short straw in life, have at least one moment in their life they enjoyed.
I feel sorry for those whose life is more endurance than enjoyment. I cant say my life has been too tough.

I'm thinking it's a ymmv thing dependent on the individual and how they respond to specific circumstances. I don't consider myself being all the happy about my circumstances but even with that there are times I enjoy life.

Do you believe life is meant to be enjoyed or endured?

This question can be interpreted in at least two different ways.

1. Taken as a literal statement, the phrase “is meant to be” implies that life actually has a meaning. Ascribing meaning’ to life implies agency; something akin to your god. Since I have no reason to accept that your god exists there cannot be a ‘meaning’ to life, enjoyable or otherwise. Life simply is. If this is the question I choose the third option - "Neither. Life has no meaning".

2. In a more general sense, the question could reflect an individual approach to everyday living measured on a continuum of optimism/pessimism. Since I tend towards optimism (I enjoy my life) I choose the first option - "Enjoyed"

Life is a mixed bag of experiencs for most.. Sometimes you are content sometimes in need sometimes your enjoying your life sometimes you are enduring your life.. Random events happen to us all.. It is rare that a life is totally about Enduring and it is also rare that a life is just about enjoyment.. As the old movie saying goes..

Lifes like a box of chocolates,, you never know what you'll get... :D

Don't sweat it Nathan and don't stop trying.
You'll always find picky people (like me) who will analyse things to death.
Your survey wasn't dumb. It made me think - that's what's important.

Especially if the chocolates are poisoned, expired or tampered with.

Its not dumb. I have seen many polls that need another option. Yours isnt the first or last. Dont worry about it Nathan.

Is the following question too disrespectful?
Did Jesus enjoy His life?
Well the end part was certainly endurance.
But I suspect He enjoyed the rest of it. Growing up as a child for instance. Still the Bible doesn't tell you much of whether He enjoyed it or not. maybe it's not important for us to know?

I think your whole OP is a false dilemma/dichotomy.

Life is meant to be lived. While that is going on one can choose to enjoy whatever pleasant things occur and endure whatever unpleasantness arises. For me, a Christian has every reason to be not only content but joyful. Waiting for a future paradise to enjoy existence is not necessary.

IMO life itself is meant to be transcended, going beyond mere endurance and enjoyment.

I could not disagree more. For me, life is paramount. As far as I can tell, to transcend life means to die or to be functionally removed from existence . I am hoping to live eternally. One may wish to transcend a corruptible life like we now experience but if the alternative is to become non existent or even just to lose one's individual identity, I do not find that better than even this corruptible existence. Conscious awareness is preferable to anything I can imagine.
