  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hello everyone!

I need your opinions on something. First off I am in college working on my Information Technology degree. Information Technology jobs are few and far inbetween in this area as there isnt very many businesses and such. Anyway I found a job in the paper wanting a part time information technology technician. so I applied for the job. well turns out this place is some kind of branch of a local Methodist mission that helps impoverished people of the area and supplys them with basic needs and stuff. Well today I get a letter back from them saying that they liked my resume and want me to fill out this form and send it back to them. but see I dont know if I should take the job on account of it being a Methodist mission. is that a sin? im confused. my friend brought up some good points about it but im still confused because this job can provide me a with a steady wage and valuable experience but on the other hand I feel like I might be offending the church by offerng my services to the methodist. any advice would be appreciated :)

EDIT: heres the web site to the place so you can see it for yourslelf http://www.hendersonsettlement.org/

No, you'll be fine. This sounds like a charitable job, so you'll be doing good. Just because it is a Methodist mission doesn't mean that you can't work there. I mean, how far are we going to go? Are we going to say that you can't have a Lutheran boss? What about a Catholic boss that doesn't go to Church every week?

That's just my feelings though. I can't guarantee everybody else will agree with me.

...Besides, your lucky to find an ITK job at all. I applied to a ton of different places but was turned down by all of them. The lack of employment opportunities is one of the reasons I decided to leave the ITK field of study. (Not altogether, though. I'm still getting a minor in information systems).

I do not think it is a sin. You'll be helping them, help the hungry and poor.

It's an honorable job, much more honorable than many positions that can be found in the workforce nowadays.

I suppose you could work IT, maintaining servers that house pornography sites and businesses... you know what I mean?

Would working there require you to convert or to do or say things that go against your Faith?

no i dont think it will. on the application thing they sent me back it has a place that asks you if you go to church and what church it is and whos your pastor. so I plan on putting my parish and father patrick down (as soon as I obtain permission from him). so if they dont want a Catholic on staff then they will just not hire me as it will be clear on what my faith is in the application :)

I still may not get the job. It says "finalists" which to me would mean they are looking at other people too. but its a possibility that I could get the job.

Well if you don't get the job, then you can sue for discrimination against Catholics. You'll make millions and won't have to worry about finding another ITK job.

It's a win-win situation for you. ;)

From what I know Red Bird does great work. When I was protestant many youth groups were able to go down there and have great experiences helping people who really needed it. They are Methodist so you will not always agree with them theologically but I doubt that will impact your job much. I would ask questions upfront about the mission. The issues that may arise that you would want to be aware of is whether they provide or encourage birth control/abortion and learn what their specific manner of helping is. Most missions don't do these things but check first. The issues I had with the Methodist General Board of Global Ministries is that I think they often cross ethical lines but that is usually in foreign country work. As I said I know many, many youth and adults who have had great opportunities in your area with Red Bird.
