• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have an obsession with wanting to please others and I know that no matter what I do I'm a failure!

I think my parents were both OCD yet opposites. I couldn't please them. I still can't please people! It's no wonder I fell for Mormonism! My whole life was about RULES!

That could be OCD, but it's definitely a good idea to get diagnosed. I hope you are able to learn to undo any perfectionism you may struggle with. It's a pattern I'm still trying to undo. It's not easy. And for me I believe it was driven by low self-esteem.

It's wonderful that you now know God's grace! :)

I struggle with this too! I'm only just learning how great God's love and grace really is, and how to accept it and dwell in it. Do you have support for your OCD, and/or good spiritual support for learning more about God's love and truth?

Some of my kids don't speak to me. It's either them or me. I always forgive; they don't. They don't like the fact that I believe Christians should follow the behavior taught in the New Testament. I believe The versesabout Christian behavior are there for us to follow. Two of my four children are atheists. They don't speak to me. Another child is Eastern Orthodox. He doesn't speak to me. His wife never liked me and I never said anything about our differences. But she told her children to not reveal things to CPS because CPS's goal is to take children away from parents. I never reported the

My parents divorced when I was nine. I hated visiting my father and stepmother because they hated the way my mother taught us.
That sounds really difficult. :( When did you come out of Mormonism? Do you have any spiritual/mental support currently in the form of a church family or other people in your life?

My support is online and being immersed in the Bible. I left Mormonism over 40 years ago. Lately I realized I don't have to be depressed about relatives who don't want to obey the Bible; that was a real problem for me. I want Christians to know that God helps us overcome sin. I came from a family who always criticized not only me but often others. My mother had no lasting friends. I don't think my father did either.

1 Thessalonians 5:18
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Ephesians 5:20
Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

We can thank God for the good things and thank Him that we survive and learn from the bad. (See my avatar).

Forgive me, Lord, when I don't know how to encourage others.

Psalm 19
14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

This is how the internet can teach us!

Forgive me, Lord, when I don't know how to encourage others.

BTW, my parents were not Mormons or Christians. My dad was an atheist and my mother was a deist.

I'm sorry for my late reply! I'm not always good at keeping up on here. Yes, I think being raised by critical parents can definitely lead to mental bondage such as perfectionism, people-pleasing, and low self esteem. It's so freeing to keep learning how much Christ loves us, and the grace He has for us even if other people disapprove of us. I've been reading so many good books lately about Jesus, His love, and living the Christian life. I don't know if you're interested in reading, but a couple of the titles I've found helpful (though I haven't finished them yet) are: "Just as I Am" and "What Really Matters" by Eugenia Price and "Love Walked Among Us" by Paul E. Miller. Also "Finding God's Life for My Will" by Mike Donehey. And if you're interested in joining another support group, I like the Facebook group "Christianity and Anxiety Disorders"!

Yes, may the Lord help us all to encourage others!

One thing I had to learn is that I don't have to get other people to follow the Bible. It's enough to plant the seeds, when the time is right.

Proverbs 16:24
Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

I saved that list of books! Thank you! Perfectionism, people-pleasing and low self esteem describe me to a tee!
