I swear a lot

Understandable, you are likely surrounded by it. I said this in another topic and copied it here. I hope it will help you, but I am sure other Christians will share with you how they conquered their profanity habits.

It is possible for Christians to live a holy life. God said, "You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy." (Leviticus 19:2). To be holy means to be separated to God, to be set apart from the world and its sin. We are made holy by faith in Christ, and as we grow and live with the Lord we will become like Him. That is our goal, to be like Jesus. We have to search our motives and desires, and as we get closer to Him we become more holy.

In Galations 5:22-23 we are told the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Contrasted with the fruit of the Spirit are the works of sinful flesh: immorality, impurity, debauchery, idolatry, witchcraft, discord, jealously, envy, hatred, and so forth. Whatever is pure and holy, that is what a Christian should do.

I had trouble thinking these when I was younger. The Lord told me to fill my mind with the Word. I think you should try to do the same. Also, ask the Lord to help you with this issue and try to avoid situations where you are tempted to say these words.

I am currently working on the same type of issue and have been having some success doint the following:

I started by telling everyone that I'm around that I am trying to stop swearing. I started smacking my hand and face everytime I swore!! It looks rather funny and it makes others aware that you are really trying to stop. I could only keep that up for so long. I switched to putting a big ole rubber band around my wrist and everytime I swear and give it a big pull and $#@!!!@@%%@ ouch!! that hurts!! It has really help in the fact that I immediately recoginize that I have cursed. I find each day I do a little better but I still get myself in those positions where it just spews out of my mouth before I even think about it. SNAP!! A few weeks of a red swollen wrist on the same arm that you wear a watch (to get the added rubbing effect lol) has worked wonders in my speech. I immediately convict myself and move on.

I used to have a lot of trouble with swearing, and I'll admit it still sometimes slips out. What I did was a picked a word I wasn't allowed to say, starting with God and Jesus, then f*** and so on, and for a month I wasn't allowed to use that one word, but I was allowed to use anything else I wanted. Gradually as I added more and more words to the list of words I couldn't say I found myself swearing less and less because it was just a habit that I stopped, until now it only really happens when I'm upset about something.

I also tried to stop spending so much time with people that swore, because I found that I swore more often around them.

It took a lot of prayer, because I was swearing pretty much every other word, but with God's help I got through it, and so just keep praying and God will help you through it to.

ok, i am a very passionate person, and have had problems with swearing. public school what can i say. but what frustrates me is the fact that even though ive very nearly stopped swearing, words like darn and shoot just dont have the same effect when one is really angry. they just dont seem to get the fuming rage out of my system where swearing used to help. has anyone else found this to be true?

I sometimes have afew 4 letters ewscape, its i think just about surrouding yourself with god. Bring your bible to school, use the previous methods of self0torture, LOL, it sounds fun im gonna try it. The torture i mean,..Sit with Christian people at lunch, find 1 religous person or no swearer in each place you go and try to immerse yourself to that person, make your life a Christian culture.

come up with a word (or fake/non-offensive "word") or phrase that is satifying for the mood(s) in which you find yourself most prone to swearing and substitute them.... especially if they are funny at the same time... it helps me out of my *angry* (or whatever) mood and start laughing at myself.

that s what helps me the most. hope it gives you some ideas.
