When I was a teen we moved to a house where I had a bedroom that luckily had a phone jack in my room! Before that there was no such thing as privacy and if anyone was on the phone, they had like 3 minutes before being told to get off! lol

Especially if it was long distance huh??

Also when we’d get back from school events later at night, in a town of 1200 people, (we lived 20 minutes from town) we’d walk 1/2 a mile to the convenience store where the pay phone was. I’d dial 0 and ask to make a collect call. Mom would answer and refuse the call because she knew where I was. 20 minutes spent hanging around the parking lot (store would be closed) there’d she come.

I remember one telephone for the household.

My parents had two landlined phones.. one in the kitchen, and one in their bedroom. And i think they were both rotary phones until about 1983-84..
Something else funny I remember from the early 80s: color toilet paper. I remember a lot of houses w/pink & yellow toilet paper (that matched the bathroom décor, etc). But I think the dye was determined to be bad for sensitive areas so it went extinct (?)

Our first push button phones still weren’t touch tone. You’d dial the number then listen to it “click” out the digits.
I don’t remember the colored TP.

I don’t remember the colored TP.

Another antiquated aspect of early 8os home bathrooms I remember.. lots of carpeting, opposed to tile now. Carpeted toilet covers, little shag carpets @ the toilet base etc. Lot of germs trapped up in there..

Typical vintage color tp, color coordinated w/the shag carpeting:

Wow that is a lot of purple lol.
We had a party line and old ladies would get on there and gossip away and everyone would listen in secretly to others phone calls lol

I had an aunt who had the party line and I remember it driving her crazy 'cause every time she wanted to use it, the neighbour lady was on it 24/7! I also remember crank calls 'cause that's what us kids did back in the day! Call someone, say something stupid, then hang up. What a riot! LOL

My grandparents were still on a party line until the early 90s. Didn’t matter much as they were the only ones still on it. But you still had to say who to bill the call to if it was long distance.
We did the crank calls also. Is your refrigerator running?....

We did too. We would call and ask for Bob. And then do it again and and again. Finally we would call back and say, Hey this is Bob, Have I had any calls?
Did that one also. But the invention of caller ID brought an end to that party. It was a service you had to pay for at the time.

Also remember taking a trip to see relatives in Dallas, which is about seven hours from here. The parents were strapped for cash and the car had a 454 under the hood. So dad put a camper shell on his Toyota pickup, took the back glass out, laid a mattress in the bed, and us three kids laid on a mattress. Between that and 1/2 the adults smoking in the house, you have to wonder if they even liked us. Lol

Lol I know right! It amazes me that we are still alive, I dug my old crib out of the barn a few years ago and stared in awe at where the mice had ate the wood all around the top of it. I showed Mom this and Mom said oh no that wasn't mice, That was you that done that when you were "teething". This crib was all lead based paint and I had ate an inch off the top side all the way around. lol
I am off the preach, so have a blessed day :]

The good ole days SIGH!!!! Technology has taken all the fun out of things. lol
Well, not all things. I still have a rotary phone on my landline but I also have my digital phone with caller ID. Life really is easier with the caller ID. I decide if I'm gonna answer or not! Or if I wanna mess around with a telemarketer! LOL And, if it weren't for technology, we wouldn't be here on this site!

Reminds me of telemarketers before caller ID....they’d ask if I’m interested, I’d say “yes, tell me all about it”. Then I’d lay the phone down and go back to what I was doing. When I heard the busy signal, I’d hang it up.
