Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

The new Patriarch will be elected on October 10th, I believe.

There has been a lot of interest in EO and OO circles of entering back into communion... I tend to be optimistic about this. I would say that within 100 years the Oriental Orthodox and the Eastern Orthodox will be united again.

It's hard to say, though.

The Orthodox Church were in serious talks in the 60s (?) and for whatever reason, they kind of fell apart and the two sides ceased to reconvene their dialogues. Because of this, we have to keep very prayerful that the MP and the ROCOR keep up with their dialogue until union is one day realized, otherwise, the talks could just disinigrate into nothing and we'll be left back at square one. I share Majorie's optimism and think that it may even come as soon as 50 years from now. I personally believed that if we wanted it bad enough, it could happen in the matter of a couple decades, but, at this time, we don't want it bad enough as a whole (from my point of view) and this is truly unfortunate.

Let's pray that this next Patriarch plays a positive role in OO/EO dialogue.

What are the primary roadblocks to reunification? Aren't the Copts non-Calcedonians? I've heard it said that the disputes are more semantic than actual, but if they reject the council of Calcedonia, can they ever be in communion with the Church until they accept it?

The wheels of Orthodoxy move v e r y s l o w. This is probably a good thing overall. Unity is important, but I have been advised that it can be harmful to worry too much about the politics that exisit in the Church. Prayer for unity, for God to help heal the dissentions that exist, and to bring the heterodox back to Orthodoxy is really about all that we can do.

Patriarch Petros of Alexandria was EO, correct ? Not sure if the OP was thinking that he was Coptic or not. Of course I could be the confused one  Not that that would invalidate the question posed re: the OO rejoining the EO, but I thought I would bring it up.

It's Pope Shenouda who's Coptic. Come on, Oblio, get your head in the game! It wasn't even that late when you posted! :p
