  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

:D

What is the silliest thing you have ever heard from anti-catholics?

That's easy. This is from a private message I received on this board. The discussion went downhill from here.

"What then does the term "Vicar of Christ" truly mean? Does that not mean "God on earth?"

Over at TBBTSNBN I heard someone exclaim that it wasn't necessary for Christ to be born of a woman, that He could have come from a cow, or a rock and we would still be saved.

I've seen this same sentiment from a couple of people here at CF...I think I remember someone mentioning a donkey though...

It is when people seem to have a big problem with candles (saying that they are a pagan practice) that I really become stumped.

Jack Chick makes claims that some Orthodox are really vampires :D

It is also important to note that while the vampire legend is nearly universal, it reached its most epidemic proportions in heavily Catholic (or Orthodox) eastern Europe. Most cultures have taboos against drinking blood. This can doubtless be traced back to the command the Lord gave Noah after the flood forbidding the drinking of blood (Gen. 9:4). It is ironic that both the Catholic and Orthodox religions feature as their central superstition the idea of drinking blood and eating flesh (under the sacramental appearance of wine and bread) against the specific commands of God. That these religions are dominant in cultures where vampirism (both in legend and in practice) runs deep is significant. People seem to know instinctively that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins (Heb. 9:22), yet Satan will do anything he can to keep them from the one kind of blood which CAN save them - God's own Blood (Acts 20:28). The psychiatric literature is full of cases of people who drink others' blood, often to the point of murder. Such people report an incredible "peace" after such an experience.

A surprising number of these people perform their vampirism in a religious context of some sort, quite frequently rooted in Catholicism. Such was my case. I was introduced to the vampire cult by members of the Orthodox clergy, who led me to believe that they were the ancient custodians of the true secret of resurrection: drinking the blood of the living! (For a full account of my descent into this nightmare world, see Lucifer Dethroned chapters 1 & 18.)

The early Christians in the Roman empire were accused of the same thing by the Romans.

Justin Martyr speaks to this in his apologetic to the Emperor and rather than say "hey guys, it's symbolic, it's only wine and bread ..." he affirms that it is indeed His most precious Body and Blood that is received in the Holy Eucharist.

I think my personal favorite is Jack Chick saying that Catholics and Orthodox worship a "wafer god".

Although second to that would be something my dad said to me when I was little, warning me to stay away from Catholics because "they're lunatics". He said, "They're so crazy about calling themselves sinners, that they promise God they're not going to do a particular sin, then they turn right around and do it." Not the first time I've ever questioned Papa's logic circuits, of course.

Athenagoras (2nd Century) tackles the charges of cannibalism as well as of incest in the Catholic Church. These accusations ran throughout contemporary literature (Justin, First Apology 7; the "Letter of Lyons and Vienne" in Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History 5.1; Tertullian, Apology 9.8; Minucius Felix, Octavius 9.5-6; Origen, Against Celsus 6.27). Most individuals today assume that these indictments arose because of a misunderstanding of Christian doctrines, namely the Eucharist and brotherly-sisterly love (such as the "kiss of peace"). Benko has also argued that certain Gnostic sects actually practiced incest and perhaps even cannibalism; these atrocities were then transferred to all Christian groups (Benko 68ff). But recent studies have convincingly given sociological, rather than historical, grounds for the slanderous rhetoric (McGowan 413-442). Fronto, the Roman rhetorician, may have brought these charges of "Thyestean banquets" and "Oedipean intercourse" to the fore in the 170's CE (Champlin 65-66).

Athenagoras' first response is to question the motives of the accusers. He scolds the opposition for raising the charges "that they may appear to themselves to have rational grounds of hatred, and because they think either by fear to lead us away from our way of life, or to render the rulers harsh and inexorable by the magnitude of the charges they bring" (Plea 31). Second, Athenagoras attacks pagan morality. The pagan myths contained such stories as Zeus' incest with his mother Rhea, his daughter Core, and his own sister. Pagan society organized immorality through the business of prostitution. It also found entertainment at the murderous gladiator fights. Third, he stresses the rigor of Christian morality. The dominical teachings called Christians to refrain not only from promiscuity, but also from lust. Sexual union was only lawful within marriage, and even then only for the sake of procreation; remarriage was considered adultery. He further questions how Christians could be accused of murder "when we say that those women who use drugs to bring on abortion commit murder, and will have to give an account to God for the abortion" (Plea 35). Fourth, he stresses the peculiar nature of Christian motivation. Christians were incited to virtue not simply by present circumstances, but also by a firm belief in a future judgment.

Cool guy!

I've had people say Augustine denied the Real Presence... One guy in England went on and on, quoting from a fundie source until I whipped out the works of Augustine... at which point, the guy CLOSED DOWN his debate forum!!!!!!
