  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I hate manga

Manga is so stupid. I don't know how everyone is so upsessed. Its boring and lame and magical little details just pop into the plot out of nowhere every five seconds. The protagonist of each book all have the same personality. All the books have the same character and sense of humour and style and it seems like your reading the same thing over and over. And the artwork is really bland for some reason. They're almost as bad as the crappy fantasy novels of the western world that are taking over the bookshelves nowadays.

Anime I can appreciate (at least the movies). They are unique among movies, they are a work of art. But as for manga, sheesh, I'd rather read a real book.

Ok. You like anime but you don't like manga because of random details popping out of nowhere? Something in that logic doesn't quite make sense.

Manga vs a "real" book isn't exactly a fair comparison. I enjoy both very much, but I feel they are completely separate entities. Manga is not a novel and a novel is not manga. They both tell different stories in different ways. If you don't like one or the other, that's you choice. I'm not complaining.

I find the characters to be refreshingly real in manga. Yes, you do get trends that continue from series to series, but some people (myself included) enjoy that. We like knowing that there's a familiar set of characters that will be waiting for us, we know some of what to expect. We don't see it as "reading the same thing over and over." It's similar, but new and different.

Crappy fantasy novels have no artwork. BTW, what do we mean by crappy fantasy novel? Are we talking about particularly bad specimens, such as Eragon? (I don't mean to offend anyone, I have my reasons, PM me if you care) Or do you think all fantasy is terrible. It does make a difference. I have some good friends who don't like the artwork in manga, but I really do like it. It's simple, it's different, it's what is required to tell the story.

Some people like it, and some people don't. There's nothing we can do about it - different people like different things. However, if you could kindly refrain from bashing an entire form of storytelling (and really accomplishing nothing else) in a forum dedicated to fans of this form (and anime) I'm sure it would be appreciated. Oh, and obsessed is spelled with an "o" not a "u."

Quite a lot of anime that gets produced is based on manga...

I'd say the diversity problems occur more due to which ones you've tried reading/seen. If you stick to just one genre of course there are going to be similarities.

uhhh.... Much of anime comes from manga,

in fact it is anime that is more often mistranslated, highly diluted or adapted for American audiences. Which is why I prefer fan subs when watching anime.

I never got a lot of manga, or much anime for that matter, just cause ive never had the money or time too....though I wish i did.

currently I think my bigger obsession is J-Rock =p

...What??

I was wondering if I should even respond what with the "artwork is bland" but I am such a manga fan that I must protest! It is one thing to have an opinion, but it's another to have an uninformed opinion. What anime I've seen, it's been worse than the manga form. (As far as I know, most anime is based off a manga, and the manga has usually a much deeper story line going on) The plots are mutilated, details ignored, art is... not very good, at least not as good as the manga form. I'm sure there are exceptions and I'm sure there are animes with budget(lol) and have really good art. I don't doubt it a bit. But there's enough bad anime for me to prefer the manga. It's basically a book-to-movie comparison. All movies based on books have to make concessions to be able to make it into a movie. Sometimes the concessions aren't a bad thing.

I mean, what animes are you even talking about, and what manga are you comparing them to?? I've been inside a Japanese bookstore, I've seen quite a bit(I'm not a regular in this forum but I am definitely a manga-regular!). And I have no clue why you would hate manga and adore anime; it just doesn't seem to fit. But neither does the thought of just tons upon tons of manga having "repetitive" characters and stuff like that. I know I don't mind, heck, the manga I read has about 20 main characters! I should hope to see some of their personalities again!

It is a general trend for them to be adaptations, but some are produced for the TV or movie screen (I'm thinking of Makoto Shinkai's work here, amongst others), or at the very least intended for that first (like Evangelion - the Sadamoto manga is simply his take on the story as character designer, although from some reports there does seem to be more resonance with it in Rebuild).

Another source which anime stems from at times are eroge (H-games), although the ones selected by major television stations are not the most extreme of their kind in any way, shape, or form. Series like most of Visual Art's/Key works (Kanon, Air, Clannad, etc.), Nanatsuiro Drops, Wind -a breath of heart-, the To Heart series (although ToHeart2's original release was an all-ages friendly PS2 edition - the later PC release of ToHeart2 XRATED added the adult material), Utawarerumono, Gift -eternal rainbow-, Happiness!, ef - a tale of memories, _summer, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (Rumbling Hearts), School Days, Tsukihime, Fate/Stay Night, etc. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is also based on a game series, although I can't find any evidence it has H-scenes. Some of the more tame - including some on that list - were later ported to PS2 or Dreamcast with the sex scenes omitted.

Most of the animes you watch originate from manga, that is a fact, so dont go around saying you hate manga when you watch the animated version on tv, you need to lighten up. Really, do you know how hard it is to add all those details in manga??? It is incredibly hard for me and if you tried to draw at least one liitle character you would know how hard the stuff is to draw.

And the animes that you watch are mistranslated, if you want the real stories in your animes, read the mangas to get the real stories and stuff... Like Naruto for instance, the anime just sucks and Naruto is just too hyperactive in the anime, personally i would much rather read the manga, the manga is better anyway, it has much more action and alot of the stuff that isnt in the anime is in the manga, so yeah. Learn to respect manga, because all the anime you watch, actually believe it or not... COMES FROM MANGA.

So yeah. I really dont like people who dis manga just because its manga. And also, it gets you reading instead of sitting on your ass watching tv. They are also better because the stories are better than the animes because it isnt fit into a little 30 mintute show and doesnt cencor every little thing. So yeah.

Okay...I hope you're not saying fantasy as a GENRE sucks, like you're saying manga does. Cuz IMHO, Fantasy DOES NOT SUCK-it beats the heck outta REALITY, and I'm not talking about Realistic Fiction works or Reality Shows on TV...
