• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Especially when seeing large crowds of people, I feel nearly worthless compared to the world. If the world population was around 1000, I could manage it, but billions is way too much. Most of these persons don't even know me and wouldn't care or even know if I died.

How can I gain self-esteem?

It is not "self"-esteem needed, but God-esteem. (paraphrase quote ~~ not self-consciousness but God consciousness ) ...

For if the same spirit that raised Christ Jesus from the dead dwells in you.....

there is only one YOU in the world
we can know we are loved by God

but as far as self-esteem, self-confidence
that comes by doing

having successes, no matter how big or small and trying things and not giving up, leads to self-esteem

we are all creative, use that creativity

giving to others of yourself, your time not only helps the other person but can contribute to your own self-worth

How can I gain self-esteem?

Question: "How should a Christian view self-esteem?"

Answer:
Many define self-esteem as “feelings of worth based on their skills, accomplishments, status, financial resources, or appearance.” This kind of self-esteem can lead a person to feel independent and prideful and to indulge in self-worship, which dulls our desire for God. James 4:6 tells us that “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” If we only trust in our earthly resources, we will inevitably be left with a sense of worth based on pride. Jesus told us, “You also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty’” (Luke 17:10).

This does not mean that Christians should have low self-esteem. It only means that our sense of being a good person should not depend on what we do, but rather on who we are in Christ. We need to humble ourselves before Him, and He will honor us. Psalm 16:2 reminds us, “I said to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.’” Christians attain self-worth and esteem by having a right relationship with God. We can know we are valuable because of the high price God paid for us through the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ.

In one sense, low self-esteem is the opposite of pride. In another sense, low-self-esteem is a form of pride. Some people have low self-esteem because they want people to feel sorry for them, to pay attention to them, to comfort them. Low self-esteem can be a declaration of “look at me” just as much as pride. It simply takes a different route to get to the same destination, that is, self-absorption, self-obsession, and selfishness. Instead, we are to be selfless, to die to self, and to deflect any attention given to us to the great God who created and sustains us.

The Bible tells us that God gave us worth when He purchased us to be His own people (Ephesians 1:14). Because of this, only He is worthy of honor and praise. When we have healthy self-esteem, we will value ourselves enough to not become involved in sin that enslaves us. Instead, we should conduct ourselves with humility, thinking of others as better than ourselves (Philippians 2:3). Romans 12:3 warns, “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.”

There are billions....yet, if you were to ask Him how many hairs were on your head, He could tell you without even having to count........ How special are you, to Him? And how great is He!

I'm not sure why you need billions of people to know you in order for you to have self-esteem? Be thankful. If they knew you they all might start asking for money! :swoon:

Honestly, I don't know exactly why. I thought about it and came up with a few explanations:

The rarer an object is, the more valuable it is, and maybe I have wrongly applied this to humans.

Or I want to have power. Then I should rely on God's power to change the world into a better place instead, or something...

I do value myself highly, but I value the world as 7600000000 times more valuable as myself. Compared to that, my high value is nothing.

I should probably stop comparing myself to the world, but it feels so wrong to do.

Self-esteem is very different from self-consciousness. You're right, if I stop focusing on myself, I could become happier.

Well why not consider you're a part of God's WOW effect. See this picture with multiple flowers. Would the effect be created with just a few? Don't feel insignificant. God focuses on things which might seem to be unimportant but are quite the opposite.

The power Yahweh (G-d) gives His children is to overcome the world, not to change the world. (notice all the billions under the world power(s) keep dying and getting worse).
And the few valuable to Yahweh , the Ekklesia called and chosen by Him, keep getting better and better.

So, yes, as Yahweh says in Scripture, His "rare" people OR perhaps FAITH (rare) is TESTED and PROVEN more and more valuable, by Yahweh. (He Tests His People with the intention and positive expectation of SHOWING THEM OFF (so to speak) to the heavenly beings eternally - showing their priceless and true faith, verified by testing) ...

Especially when seeing large crowds of people, I feel nearly worthless compared to the world. If the world population was around 1000, I could manage it, but billions is way too much. Most of these persons don't even know me and wouldn't care or even know if I died.

How can I gain self-esteem?

That thought can be indeed overwhelming. It happened to me and it made me struggle with a lot of anxiety because I became aware of how small I am. Then a friend told me about a scene in the movie Superman. Clark gets overwhelmed with his gifts and becomes aware of people and his surrounding. He gets so overwhelmed that he locked himself in the janitors closet. Then his teacher and classmates went to get him but he could hear what they were saying making it worst. Martha, Clark’s mom, got to school and he is explaining that the world is too big. She said, “Then make it small.” Then she says, “Just focus on my voice...”.

I had to focus on God’s voice and God’s thoughts to be able to feel safe in this mad world. I had to learn to make my world smaller, to enjoy the close friends I have and that not everyone gets to know me nor I get to know everybody, and it is ok for it to be that way.

You are not insignificant, there’s only one you in the world. Know yourself, learn about your gifts and how your uniqueness can contribute to your “tribe” . Make your world smaller. ❤️

Here is the scene:

Wish you best!

Self esteem is easy - obey the Lord's commandments.
