Mariya, I make my own house skirts that are about 35-37 inches long, long enough to be modest, but a couple of inches above my ankles to avoid tripping. I wear a simple vest, flannel long-sleeved shirt, or long-sleeved corduroy unlined jacket over my blouse. When I wear the long-sleeved flannel shirts or cord jackets in warm weather, then I can wear a t-shirt underneath, otherwise I like to wear turtlenecks.

It takes a very wide fabric to make long caftans. Since most fabrics are only 42 to 45 inches wide, extra seams are necessary.

A simple "A-line" skirt with an elastic casement is easy to sew and inexpensive. If I buy the 2-1/2 yards of fabric on sale, I can make a skirt for as low as $10.00 to $20.00. That beats buying those skirts online or at stores on sale for about $40.00 or more + shipping and tax.

By the way, cotton and linen have become very expensive. Furthermore, many farmers are now using GMO cotton, but they have been having one grief after another with failing crops, workers who are coming down with hives and cancer, high suicides among farmers, and farmlands poisoned with Round-Up (TM) and other deadly chemicals.

Polyester, which is a very popular fabric used to make many abayas, is actually a plastic made using petroleum, and in our hot summers, it can deteriorate. I have read that use of polyesters can contribute to lupus.

Oh, do put it on and have someone take a picture of you modeling it.
Those are very expensive.

I have seen some Indian women wear a matching women's t-shirt and a simple A-line or straight skirt underneath their sari. This skirt is usually made of rayon.

The Laura Ashley "granny style" dresses popular in the '70s would also fit the bill. A lot of websites sell modest clothing for women - one that comes to mind is Tznius.com - Modest Clothing, Headscarf, Tichels and Jewish Clothing.

The abayas, kaftans and saris are very pretty too.

You know, it's a good idea. I may just stick with these comfy shirt and skirt for now.

Everyone likes to be relaxed and casual at home, but when there are unrelated people sitting a foot away from your back as you're making your breakfast, you want to first of all look put together, as if you were in a public place, and second of all be covered.

Yes, I agree. Even with relatives, I like to dress modestly. And that outfit looks so comfortable.

Re: the Bohemian type of skirt, please be careful as those skirts not only shrink and can tear due to their sheerness, but also they are usually not colorfast, especially those made in India and Pakistan.

There was a woman who wore one of these long sheer Bohemian skirts at the local grocery store. When standing behind her at check out, one could see her buttocks as the thin fabric hugged her body. It was obvious that she was not wearing a slip. Therefore, in the full sunlight, that skirt was probably too revealing. It would have been much more modest to wear a denim short skirt.

I find that I usually have to re-sew the hems and flounces of these skirts as they frequently fall apart once they are washed. In addition, the elastic often falls apart after one washing. Many tags suggest dry cleaning these skirts due to the dyes used, but that does not solve the problem. For example, I wore a pretty red Bohemian skirt and got red dye all over my white slip.

I have had to donate almost all of my Bohemian skirts because the dyes used were not stable, they shrunk, or I had to resew them, which left them too short. I have had to replace the elastic in almost all my store or online purchases. Think about it: all that wasted fuel and time spent shopping and repairing items of clothing. Thus, it is best to make clothing from new fabric as that saves time, fuel, and money too.

Furthermore, wearing the shear multi-layered Bohemian style of skirt is not practical around the house or on the job. I get the bottom of the skirt caught and torn in my computer chair, or worse, the skirt flies when I walk and will catch in a door, the car door, or snag something. In short, they are hazards.
They are not even practical to wear to church as people have stepped on the flounce and almost pulled them off the woman, or when arising from a kneeling position, one could get caught in the flounce.
