IANAMT (I am not a moral theologian), but in my admittedly lightweight opinion, it would depend on what medical reason you're taking the pills for.

For instance: a woman with uterine cancer can undergo a hysterectomy without incurring sin, because the removal of the cancerous organ allows the body to go on living, even though the removal of the uterus renders the woman sterile. She is not removing the uterus to prevent birth. If the pills youi're taking render a similar benefit, it may---may, because I don't know this for sure---be morally permissible.

Questions to ask:

What condition are you taking the pills to alleviate?

Are there alternative methods of dealing with the same problem?

If you went off the pills to have children, what sort of problems would you incur?

Is there a chance of the problem correcting itself once you do have children?

This is something you need to discuss with your priest and your doctor. Once again, IANAMT, and NIAEH (neither is anybody else here). ;)

Be careful. The doctor put me on the pill when I was 19 and said I'd be on them for life. But another doctor only prescribed a healthy diet with B6 and Magnesium supplementation and now I am fine - no more cramping or fainting spells.

Catholics don't believe is using artifical "birth control" methods to stop a pregancy from occuring. Since you and your BF are not having sex I assume, whether you are taking the pill now is not of any consequence.

I am a Catholic and also a medical doctor, can you tell me the reason? If it is too personal, you can PM me or keep it to yourself.

I can assume that you are taking them to regulate your menstrual cycles because of excessive bleeding or excessive pain. These conditions would probably make you infertile without taking the "pill", so the birth control pills are not actually preventing pregnancy. Also since you are not married (you mention a boyfriend and not a husband) you know that sex without marriage is a sin with or without birthcontrol.
The catholic church is not against the taking of medication for the relief of suffering, but is against the profaning of the sexual union of husband and wife. This is called Onanism. You can read about it in Genesis. Onan was a son of Judah that had sex with his wife, but "spilt his seed on the ground" instead of fathering children, so God killed him. Catholic thought is that natural family planning is righteous, as having children responsibly is good, but inhibiting the fruits of sexual union by artificial means is sin.

It is not a sin to take the "pill" if it is not used for birthcontrol, or it is used for legitimate medical reasons.

Hope this helps,

Jerome

After our son was born, my wife's obstetrician recommended BCP for her to control the hormonal swings she was having at the time---postpartum depression, etc. She checked with our pastor, who told her as long as she was taking them for a medical reason and not to prevent birth, then it was permissible.

But, once again: check with your priest and your doctor. :)

Ah, polycystic ovarian disease. This is a condition that usually produces infertility. There are other manifestations of the disease which I hesitate to share in a public forum, as they can be embarassing, but one of them is difficulty in regulating blood sugar levels mimicing diabetes. Is this what you have Ileany11?

If so, I do not believe that taking birth control pills would constitute sin in this case, but IANAMT, I am a doctor of medicine.

Dear Ileany and Dr. Jerome:

Have you ever heard of Couple to Couple League based in Ohio. They have a physicians group with special conferences for doctors. CCL seeks alternatives to using the birth control pills, like good nutrition. They have excellent classes on Natural Family Planning and it is a very Catholic group. Please check them out.

Yours truly in Christ our God,
Elizabeth

I am not a doctor, so you would need to speak to one, but I have a book called Fertility, Cycles, and Nutrition you might be interested in checking out. It gives a lot of advice on nutritional alternatives.

In answer to your question, I would see a priest who has some medical knowledge.

Welcome Home!
