  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Judges 11:31

King James:
Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

Douay-Rheims:
Whosoever shall first come forth out of the doors of my house, and shall meet me when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, the same will I offer a holocaust to the Lord.

The bible I'm reading (T.O.B. in french) is closer to the Douay-Rheims translation, so during my lunch hour I read that a guy named Jephté vowed to sacrifice a human to God in exchange for a military victory, I expected it to be like the Moise story but sadly it wasn't, Jephte offered his daugther in sacrifice and his God accepted.

My question is which version is closest to the original Hebrew, did Jephte promise "Whosoever" or "Whatsoever" came out of his house?

Whatsoever. He didn't know what would come out of the door. Note how the pronouns are used in either version: "the same will I" ... "I will offer it up". This story is the reason why not to swear. I don't know what the man was thinking when he made this rash promise. :(

This shows a big mistake and not a whole lot of knowledge on this man's part. He was rash and foolish in his oath and rash and foolish in carrying it out. God DOES NOT want human sacrifices, or animals anymore either. If he had been smart he would have sacrificed his daughter's life as a Nazarite. In that way her life would be given to the Lord for his service but he wouldn't have had to kill her.

I hope this helps

Thats why Jesus said about swearing oaths:

Matthew 5
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

Except the oath said that he would offer it up as a burnt offering, not just a sacrifice.

Be very careful when you promise. However, Psalms praises those who keep their oaths "even when it hurts".

Surely God did, and he seemed ok with the deal since he gave Jephte victory and didn't destroy him.

He held the guy to his word. That is it. He doesn't destroy people for obeying His commands.

God wouldn't accept sacrifices. It would be insulting to God who already gave the perfect sacrifice to reconcile us with Him. It would be like saying to God 'Your perfect sacrifice isn't good enough'.
There seems to be a lack of an understanding of the words "accept" and "sacrifice". Lent is a sacrifice. The man said "God, if this happens, I'll be so happy, I'll do so and so to show how happy I am." God held the man to his word, because that is the right thing to do: to keep your word. The man made a rash promise, though. So he ended up having to sacrifice (ie "give up") his daughter by burning her. It could've been a pig. Would God have accepted that as a sacrifice? He would accept it as a sacrifice, but not as a ceremonial or sacrifice as perscribed by the law. He just said that he would give up whatever came through the gate.
