Hello Dear All,

I would like to better understand what grace is, I know it is a gift from God which is in no way attached to any good behaviour or merited by any works I do but, what purpose does it serve.. what is it really?

Thank you

Good question.
Grace doesn't serve any purpose.
It is really just an unbelievable undeserved blessing of everything God continually pours out on or for all people on earth each and every day they are alive. (and later in the new heavens and the new earth)
It is God's 'character' , speaking in human terms - God is extravagantly generous in everything from Creation to the Crucifixion to Judgment Day.(a lot more people get saved from being tossed into the lake of fire than deserve it. pure and righteous grace and choice on God's Part).

Grace is useless without faith. This is an important concept, because we can talk about grace a long time and those that put no faith in God's grace, get less benefit from his grace. They get only the ordinary grace... you live, you breath, but nothing by faith through a promise.

When you believe a promise of God, and have peace, that's grace.

Let me give you an analogy of grace. You're driving on the street and the speed limit is 50mph, the police officer pulls you over and tells you that you were going 70mph. You have no license and according to the law you should spend some time in jail. You plead with the officer and he decides to let you of the hook. This officer showed grace to you. You had no claim for freedom and did not deserve it because according to the law you were supposed to be jail. God's grace allows us to have the ultimate freedom because according to the law, we are all sinners, the penalty for which is eternal death. God's grace spares us from that penalty. That is the purpose of grace, so that we can have eternal life.

Grace is like you hitting me in the face, and me, taking you to a restaurant, and buying you a nice meal!

Grace for us is totally about what God the Father has done for us, through the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ, from the death, and is nothing to do with, how holly we are, or how well we perform before God! Of course, we must keep the commandments of God, but that is not earning us, any grace from God! Grace is to do with Who God is, and not with who we are. It is about what He has done for us, and is not what we have done for Him!

Grace is God giving us a blessing, which we do not and can not deserve!

Holiness is Jesus Christ in me.
Grace is a proof, that the church is fallible, as it has been through history.
Only when we are weak, grace will come to support us, otherwise, we do not need more grace.
The Law was given to show us, that we can never be holy and good enough in God's eyes, and
that we need grace to be saved.
Grace and mercy are only for those who repent and believe in God. There is no grace and no
mercy to the person who rejects God, otherwise, no body would go to hell.
Grace means, that if somebody hits you in the face, you not only do not hit them back, but
also buy them an icecream.
Grace is an undeserved blessings from God. No person can deserve a blessing from God,
because the Bible says that all have sinned, and have falled from the glory of God. The only
person who can deserve a blessing from God, is the person who is 100% all the time holy and
perfect without ever making sin.
Grace is unconditional love. It is like somebody scratching your back, without asking you to
scratch them back. Conditional love says 'If you scratch my back, I will scratch yours'.
Grace is not a licence for sin.
Grace is the proof, that we can never be good enough before God.
Grace is for those who repent.

Understanding God's grace is rightly focused how we can't do anything to deserve salvation or the forgiveness of our sins, but that God has chosen to forgive and save us anyway. Keep in mind that what we deserve—what we have earned for ourselves—is eternal punishment. However his grace is even bigger than just for salvation. It is his unmerited provision for all of our needs in this life (and we have many). One example is that it is best for us in the long-term to stop sinning. For many it is a process of trying to not sin and failing and learning how undeserving one is and that God still loves you and has saved you, anyway.

Don't be shy in investing some time into a book or two about God's grace.

The term "grace" in the New Testament is used primarily in two ways:

1.) The unmerited mercy and love of God expressed to us in its supreme form in the Person of Christ, our Saviour (1Jn. 1:14; 1Ti. 1:14; 2Ti. 2:1; Ro. 5:17). It is in this grace found in Christ in which the adopted and redeemed child of God stands before their Heavenly Father (Ro. 5:2). It is through this grace that we are saved (Eph. 2:8; Ro. 3:24; Tit. 3:7) and by which we may forever be confident in God's acceptance of us (Eph. 1:6). God's grace is not us-dependent but is extended to us in Christ totally apart from our having earned it. And it remains so extended no matter how we live - a fact fear-mongering legalistic Christians love to suppress. The apostle Paul is very direct in his warning to such Christians:

Galatians 5:4
4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

2.) Grace is also spoken of as the power of God - given to us in the Person of the Holy Spirit - that enables us to live as God commands.

Hebrews 12:28
28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

See also: Heb. 4:16; Ac. 4:33; Ro. 12:6; 1Cor. 15:10; 2Cor. 12:9

Hope this helps. And welcome to the family of God!

Selah.

II. GRACE

1996 Our justification comes from the grace of God. Grace is favor, the free and undeserved help that God gives us to respond to his call to become children of God, adoptive sons, partakers of the divine nature and of eternal life.46

John 1:16-17 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.[d] 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Grace is not a NT concept, but rather it says that grace was added upon grace, so the grace of Christ was was added upon the grace of the law. Strong's defines "grace" as "the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life" and God's law is instructions for how to to do His will, so when God influences us to do His will and it is reflected in our lives, that takes the form of obedience to His law. In Romans 1:5, it says that we have received grace to bring about the obedience of faith, and the obedience of faith is depending on God for instructions for how we should live in a way that is pleasing to Him. Our salvation is from sin (Matthew 1:21) and sin is lawlessness (1 John 3:4), so our salvation is from lawlessness for the purpose of obedience to the law. God's law is part of Scripture, which equips us to do every good work (1 Timothy 3:16) and and we are saved by grace through faith not by doing good works, but rather we are made new creations in Christ for the purpose of doing good works (Ephesians 2:8-10). So to unpack what it means to be saved by grace through faith, we are saved from lawlessness by God training us to obey His law through living in a manner that depends on Him for instructions for how to do His will. We are also saved by grace through faith from the penalty of lawlessness by being redeemed from lawlessness. Everything grace brings in these verses is what our salvation looks like:

Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

'grace' is the expression of God's mercy, and mercy is the expression of God's love.

God' Love -> God's mercy -> God's grace.

or simply saying, God loves you (although you are a sinner and deserve hell), and so he shows his mercy to someone who deserves hell. how he does is by grace - 'giving you something you don't deserve' - an undeserved gift. and this is the giving of himself through christ (to carry the guilt, punishment and unrighteousness in exchange for his sinlessness, eternal life and righteousness).

This is weird but I got someone to understand it with this explanation, so I'll try it again.

I love all cats. Cats are special creatures to me. My cat loves me but sometimes she spazzes and I get scratched. My cat has done something that caused me grief or pain. We've become separated.
But, I had forgiven her immediately when she came to apologize. Just like any cat that might scratch me and then come back to apologize. The cat is forgiven simply because they asked and I love cats....grace.

However, my personal cat feels rotten. she brings me "treats" (dead things lol)..she is doing works. She is not forgiven due to her works. her works make her feel better by giving me something.

I don't know if it makes sense of not

God IS Gracious. Apart from God there is no Grace.
He is Gracious to everyone, granting them life and opportunity for eternal life.
Even more,
John 15 shows how Gracious God is toward His Children :
(from biblegateway, MSG) >>
4 “Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. ..
5-8 “I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant.

Separated, you can’t produce a thing. Anyone who separates from me is deadwood, gathered up and thrown on the bonfire.

But if you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon. This is how my Father shows who he is—when you produce grapes, when you mature as my disciples.

9-10 “I’ve loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you’ll remain intimately at home in my love. That’s what I’ve done—kept my Father’s commands and made myself at home in his love.

11-15 “I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love.

Put your life on the line for your friends.
You are my friends when you do the things I command you.

I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning.

No, I’ve named you* friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father.

*His Personal Disciples who gave up everything to live as He says.

A number of people have responded with statements of what grace is, but that isn’t a direct answer to the OP. It asked what grace is for.

Grace is God’s desire to bring us to him, and then to stick with us, even though we don’t deserve it. Its first purpose is to reconcile us to him. Once we’re followers of Jesus, grace then leads God to support us in our Christian lives.
