  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

How well do you know God?

I guess this is a spin-off from the Christianity to atheism thread, because this was a point that was raised, and it got me to thinking, really. I don't think I know God very well. I understand that we can't know everything - or even very much - ("for now we see through the glass, darkly...") but in terms of knowing Him, I really don't.

So I suppose am wondering whether you all feel you do? And if so, what do you know Him to be?

I should clarify, am talking about God specifically, not Jesus or the Holy Spirit.

Thank you bunches

I don't think any of us can "know" the Father as much as maybe He'd like us to - or that we're even capable of in our humanity....

I think people who go thru alot of suffering and pain and who rely heavily on God in those moments end up knowing Him the best. The people who are more intimately in a close relationship w/ Him will know Him best. (I guess that's just like human relationships)..

I guess I feel safe putting it this way; I know God well enough thru all the pain & suffering I went thru (due to my own stupidity & rebellious decisions) to fully trust Him with my life no matter what things appear to be down here.
He's proven Himself to me where I have no doubts about or against God whatsoever.
Not that I don't panic or worry like everyone else does when situations look scary - but my full trust in is the Lord who fulfills every promise He makes and proves His own Words true.

=)

That's an incredibly hard question, isn't it?
I don't think we can ever really know Him, and thinking that we do is hubris really...
He is God - how can a human mind even begin to know Him?
But.. I can trust Him, and be close to Him and depend on Him... just as a small baby trusts in his mother, although he can't really know her.
And the more we go through with Him, the more we know His presence, the closer we can come to Him.
And really, that is enough... just as it is enough for the baby to be close to his mother.

I agree. Church is a wonderful thing and meant for us to know God, but when I was growing up and learning of God and getting close to him I did not have church around me. Through prayer and grief I found Him and believe my relationship with him to be close and good. Of course, I know I can get closer and hope to.

I don't think anyone can say that they KNOW God. We can know Him in part. I know that I trust God more today than I did 4 years ago. Like, Nadiine, it is through the trials that we come to know God better.

Sometimes too it seems just when I think I know God a little bit better there's a funny turn in the road. I trust more and love more but understand less than I used too (I used to know it all some years ago ;) )

That's a kind of complicated one isn't it. I know enough of Him to be in awe of His glory. I can trust Him absolutely, as He is sustains my very existence. He is my Father and loves my as I love my children, only perfectly. He watches me as I seek Him out, and He reveals Himself to me. He takes joy in my triumphs, and is ready to correct me with His rod and His staff, wich is a great comfort. He will work everything for my good, and has my best interests at heart. Even though I might suffer, my Father provides what I need most. I get to know my Father a little more every day. How wonderful a thought that this will continue for the rest of my life. And then, in heaven, I will learn yet another wonderous new thing about Him every day for eternity. We can only ever know a part of Him as He is infinte and we are finite. How absolutely awesome is that? We will NEVER fully understand Him. Every moment of eternity will be a new revelation of His glory. Just thinking about that I want to jump up and shout for joy (though I think my wife would hasten my journey through this life and send me on to heaven should I do so and wake the babies lol).

Great post
Although we can never fully understand God he wants me to seek him with all my heart 'And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13)
I believe we can only get to know God as we spend time in prayerful meditation of His Word and allow His Holy Spirit to reveal His Truth to our hearts.
