How TV effects us all

TV plays such a large role in culture. I can remember when I was young, most shows had a moral theme. Even the sitcoms, such as Goodtimes, Sanford and Son, All in the family, Happy Days, ect...taught a moral at the end. Today, I see little of this. Even old Archie Bunker taught us some valuable lessons.

I know how important what we put in our heads effects us. I have wonderful memories of our family sitting together and watching the Waltons, Little house, ect...We actually learned a lot of values from Hollywood. Now, compare that to what kids today watch, MTV with disgusting reality shows about nothing but immoral sex. Hollywood basically runs the culture and anyone can see the result of it.

As a parent, I block most channels and think I'm going to dump all but basic cable.

I think it would do America a lot of good if they put some of the old shows back on prime time.

My favorite series was Little House on the Prairie. I have all the series and we sit down as a family and watch them all the time. I love the character Charles Ingalls. I think he is a man all men should inspire to be.

TV gets a lot of the blame for a lot children's bad behaviour when in fact the blame can be laid directly at the feet of bad parenting.

Having said that, watching and entire season of Dexter back to back on DVD can seriously mess with you're head!

Luckily some of the shows I miss can be seen in re-runs (like Big Valley, Bonanza, Gunsmoke - yeah, my Dad got me hooked on Westerns). But I would love to see the Lassie series from the late 60's and early 70's, Gentle Ben, Paradise, And an odd couple of shows no one seems to remember - Lost Islands (from Australia) and StarLost (from Canada).

Having said that, watching and entire season of Dexter back to back on DVD can seriously mess with you're head!

Not to mention give you a headache from all the psuedoscience.

My parents were very careful what they let us watch. As a child my sister and I loved the Lawrence Welk variety show... we would put on our dress up clothes and waltz around the living room while mom fixed supper. Great memories!

I didn't grow up with TV. What TV I watched was on PBS, though my favorite show was Star Trek!!! But the Magic School Bus, and Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego were great.
I like pretty much everything on the Discovery Channel, and Animal Planet.

What has really upset me about tv is that the News is not the News anymore. It is the commentary of whoever owns the network. This very, very, bad.....in light of how the party nominations went and now how the Republican Vice Presidential and Presidential nominees are being slandered.

We have the problems in the UK with tv shows being less moral than they used to be. We have had a lot of good shows from the States which always had a moral at the end. Even though they have already been mentioned little House and Happy Days were excellent, Mork and Mindy. Some may disagree but Buffy the Vampire Slayer was riddled with morals. I don't know if it is the same in the Stated but there are now a lot of soaps that influence people and they are not always that good, over here we have shows called Eastenders and Coronation Street. They are supposed to depict real life, anyone with half a brain can see that there is hardly any real life in them.

I stopped watching the news on CBS because after 9/11 they seemed to be in the fear mongering business. Everything seemed aimed at instilling fear of tomorrow in the viewers. It really got old quickly. And many stories that were news were not covered.

You can always depend on the media to distort the truth.
They never let the facts get in the way of a good story, that's for sure.

I don't know about over there in the states, but here I've noticed if something happens, you can switch on the news on 4 different stations and get 4 different stories.

Even worse these days as we access to news stations all over the world.

We got rid of our TV a couple of years ago.

We now have a very large collection of DVDs of classic, family friendly movies and TV shows. We show them on PowerPoint on a large screen we hang up in our back yard.

When we had our first child, Julie and I really started to pay attention to what we allowed into our home and then, we got one of the first cable boxes that allow you to block shows and channels. We started by blocking MTV, TBN, the Catholic channel, and VH1. Then, we started to block individual shows.

Next thing you know, pretty much everything was blocked.

Then, one day, somebody told us that there was a show we should watch called "Torchwood". It was absolutely vile and that was the one that broke the camel's back. Even my son, who was ten years old at the time, turned to me and said, "this isn't a good show for us to watch".

ABCFamily, a channel which advertises itself as family-oriented entertainment, has things on it no child should be subjected to.

But here's something really interesting. We love to listen to old radio shows and, the other day, I was sitting in my office listening to Red Skelton's show and it was the last show of the season.

He said that the show would be moving to TV the next fall and that they may continue to do the show on radio, but he wasn't sure.

Here's the kicker! On this show, Red addressed his audience and said "We're all very greatful that you've allowed us into your homes for these many years. We recognize that we are guests in your home and we hope that we've respected the sanctity of your home. Our only intention was to make you laugh and if we've done or said anything that is offensive, we're terribly sorry and ask your forgiveness."

Now, Red Skelton is about as "G" rated as they come and I can't for the life of me imagine what he might ever have said that would be offensive, but can you imagine somebody on TV saying that today?
