Putin loves his country and his people more than those who sell out to the devil's dollars and fame looking at his deeds. For all his flaws I truly respect this intelligent, clever, daring and dangerous to cross man.

I think all us Westerns should, and Americans in particular. For Putin has far more integrity than any recent American president has been able to muster up to date.

I hope Putin will not hesitate one moment to put his country before the new world order interests. I hope he will succeed in halting Trump's treacherous and truthless ways when it comes to the Middle East.

Though there remain some real questions about his own elite status, it appears that Putin may not be one of those who sell us out to the corporations ruling this planet.

Clinton Watts Center for Cyber and Homeland Security testified, 'follow the trail of dead Russians, there have been more dead Russians in the last 3 months, that are tied to this investigation, who have assets in banks all over the world. They are dropping dead even in western countries" (Jack Tapper, CNN 5/14/2017). There hasn't been any direct connection to our ongoing political drama over interference in the 2016 Presidential election or Trump's antics but Putin's Russia doesn't respond well to descent.

The truth is the man can be very impressive. On NPR on the anniversary of 911 he was asked why after years of fighting they still couldn't stop the trouble in Chechnya. He answers in two words, 'Islamic mercenaries', they were fighting the war on terrorism well before we even called it that. He was asked by Charlie Rose about the invasion of the Ukraine he said, and I'm paraphrasing, the separatists were trying to overthrow a free election and both Russians and Ukrainians are Slavic people so we wanted to help.

I'm not defending him here, apparently the threat of the Russian bear is back. I think this is insightful:

Generally, if you like that system, you will consider Vladimir Putin a menace. If you don’t like it, you will have some sympathy for him. Putin has become a symbol of national sovereignty in its battle with globalism. That turns out to be the big battle of our times. As our last election shows, that’s true even here.

Globalism is receding and nationalism is on the rise in Europe and the United States. England is getting out of the European Union and the Asian markets are showing serious signs of economic instability. Russia is a wild card on the world scene and they appeared mired in intrigue and a fierce nationalism. My view, better watch out for this guy.

Putin is the best leader for Russia right now. Yes his country is stronger and ( because of oil and gas ) richer under him. I like that he is moving the culture from communism to Russian orthodoxy. There has been a loss of freedoms for conservative Evangelicals under him. I have no problem with Russian annexation of the Crimea but his ambitions to reassert Russian hegemony in Eastern Europe are doomed to fail and counter productive to Russian interest. I had hoped that the Russian - American relationship could have been better with Trump. The Democrats are doing their best to sabotage that. Russia could be an ally against Islamism and a help against the rise of China. I must admit support for Assad is looking a little suspect since the gas attack. Maybe we need to think in terms of partitioning Syria into smaller units when IS is defeated. Maybe Russias friend Assad can keep the coastal bit so they still have their port.

1. Yep, despite the Russophiles crowing about Putin's "genius" in seizing Crimea, Russian strategy in Ukraine has proven to be an absolute disaster. Instead of leaving Ukraine alone and letting it go back to normal in a few years with little bad press, or invading all of Ukraine and imposing Finlandization upon it, he instead adopted half measures like supporting the Donbass rebels which turned the Ukrainian people permanently anti Russia, as well as receive enormous amounts of negative media attention for so little territory.

2. Against Islamism yes, I doubt you could fully turn Russia against China though. To you main point however any reasonable observer can see than China has far more potential than Russia however unlike the Russians China has shown no interest in exporting their ideology, which means that the obsession with the weaker of the two shall continue.

Yes Putins strategy in the Ukraine is self defeating, we need a resolution and stable borders. I think recognising that Crimea is a part of Russia should be a part of that settlement.

People think the Chinese are harmless cause they always sit on the fence and basically do not anything to jeopardise their global image. This itself is part of a self awareness that senses they are not yet strong enough to be assertive and say exactly what they think. By the time they reach that point there will be little that the rest of us can do about it. In the meantime they focus on finding jobs for millions of rural Chinese moving to the cities and consolidating their position in their own backyard. But in the long run the main player here will be China and for the rest of us the issue will be how we interact with that new global power.

As the EU moves to look for new kinds of friendship with China over a relationship with the USA that has been downgraded by responses to the Trump presidency it could well make the mistake that the EU and China have common interests. While on a business level that may be true, politically and culturally it is definitely not true.
