Are we really all that surprised? An OS that spies on you.
I thought Google Chrome and TOR were bad in their day. Leave it to Windows to out-do.

what programs? for the most part there is always a *nix equivalent

Spybot Anti-Beacon is freeware and does a good job of stopping a lot of spying.
