[QUOTE="Kalevalatar, post: 75290500, member: 116770"] Lapland has not "always" had 98F super-heatwaves; Lapland has never before had such record temperatures. Or weeks and weeks of wildfires spreading through four countries despite our tireless raking of our forests and tundras. Or winters without snow cover. -31F used to be normal. Now if the winter temperature reaches -31F, it makes headlines. Lapland has always had lichens, which take hundreds of years to grow. Without snow cover and with extreme heat and pollution, lichens are dying. With lichen, the reindeer will be gone. This didn't happen before. It is happening now. Permafrost was thought to be forever. The last couple of decades have proved that if we want to, we can indeed destroy it forever, and that is exactly what we are doing. All that critical strategic infrastucture that was built on the permafrost because of its lasting quality is now collapsing, sinking and leaking and will take billions to repear or relocate. New foreign invasive species, pests and fungi are taking over. Anyone who owns commercial forest, and many of us do, already knows that these non-native pests, heat and wind damage, forest fires, mild winters and loss of frost, torrential rains and floods are damaging our industry and killing our profits. Those of us who live in an Arctic country simply cannot afford that American right-wing political ideology of climate change denialism and claiming it's all just down to fake news, with our nice neighbour Vladimir Putin happy to supply the talking points for you, when it is happening right in our very own back yard and with an economic price tag that we are already paying. One must be stupid to continue to poop and dump in one's own backyard, you know, let alone to turn it into a political ideology worth fighting for. Putin may be happy to fan the flames of your denialism to divide America and to Make America Gone Again, but he's smart enough to know that his personal wealth and power lies directly in the Russian Far North's permafrost. So while he trolls American far right-wingers with climate change denialism, his right hand is actually busy signing orders to fight climate change in Russia so that Russia can save its future.
